The no rules just suggestions movie meme
Quoting
stonebender, who made the meme: "I'm not much for best or favorite kind of lists. I can always think of several whatevers that would fit in whatever category. So feel free to pick one or more than one to answer any of these. I'd be interested in people's answers, so letting me know where your responses are would be great. I'm going to leave the meme here without my answers. I'll answer the meme in another post. One last thing: context and stories are encouraged." [Note: I'll put a blank set of questions into comments.]
1. What movies do you like to talk about?
Depends on the company. Baseball movies are fun for me, but most people I hang around with aren't into baseball or baseball movies, so I don't get into it that much. I love telling people about really good and/or important movies I've seen that I think they will like. I am haunted by the movie "Osama" (which is not about bin Laden), and will dissect it in conversation at the slightest opportunity.
2. Are there any directors you particularly follow?
No, not really, though there are a few I avoid: Michael Bay (for aesthetic reasons); Clint Eastwood (for political reasons), etc.
3. Are there any actors that will motivate you to see a film that wouldn't generally interest you?
Kathy Bates. Kevin Spacey. Angela Bassett. Taye Diggs (mrowr! I didn't love "How Stella Got Her Groove Back", but I love Bassett and Diggs so much that I could watch it a zillion times.)
4. Are there any movies that you wish you hadn't seen?
Hmm. No, I guess not, though some were wastes of time, relatively speaking.
5. What genres do you particularly like?
I would love to eventually see every Oscar-nominated foreign-language film, because so far, I've liked almost every one I've seen. I like romantic comedies if they're not too frighteningly heterosexist, but that's hard to find. (Recent one I enjoyed: Love and Other Disasters.) Love baseball movies, but that's not exactly a genre. Have a soft spot for "triumph of the underdog" dramas, whether or not they're about sports. Have seen roughly eighty squillion old bad black-and-white horror and sci-fi flicks, and will probably see umpty squillion more before I die.
6. What genres do you avoid like the plague?
Modern slasher flicks, though I do like some of the older ones, like Halloween. The genre that is called, in my house, "14-year-old-boy humor", with people like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell in it.
7. Are there any movies that are really popular that you just don't get?
Oh, sure, LOTS of them. First few to come to mind are Crash (I hated it); The Dark Knight (I thought it was bleak and long and without redeeming characteristics, and that includes what's-his-name's Joker portrayal. Heath Ledger, that's his name); Million Dollar Baby (Seriously? You have youth, smarts, and all the money in the world, not to mention people who love you, and you can't find a way to make your life meaningful enough that suicide isn't your only logical option?)
8. Are there any movies that you love that most of your friends haven't seen?
Osama. Cinema Paradiso. Mediterraneo.
9. Are there any movies that you thought you would hate, but ended up really enjoying?
Spanglish (though "really enjoying" is a stretch). Stranger than Fiction (ditto).
10. Are there any scenes or monologues that have stayed with you long after you've seen the movie?
The "I believe" speech in Bull Durham. The bee-charmer scene in Fried Green Tomatoes. The final scene in Osama.
11. Any movies that you think should have a sequel?
Nah, I don't really think that way.
12. Any movies that the sequel ruined?
SO many. :-) The only one that comes to mind is Blade. Well, and Highlander, but I haven't actually seen the movies; I just know a lot of geeks.
13. What movies do you think about from your childhood?
Sleeping Beauty. Dumbo. The Abbot and Costello movies. The Wizard of Oz. The Sound of Music. South Pacific. Oklahoma!
14. What movies can you watch again and again?
someotherguy and I re-watch lots of movies: the Austin Powers trilogy; old bad movies; Blade; Men in Black... Me alone? I rewatch Fried Green Tomatoes, Bull Durham, and Sleeping Beauty at least once a year on average.
15. Any cool chase scenes?
The only chase scene I have any feelings about is the one in Foul Play.
16. Any really hot scenes?
Several in Bull Durham, which is my iconic sexy movie. The seduction scene in Bound.
17. Any cool fights?
Don't care about fights.
18. Any movies that really changed how you think about something?
Sure. In big ways, though? Hmm. Probably, but I'm not coming up with an example right now.
19. Any good adaptations of a book to the screen?
Fried Green Tomatoes is a much better film than book. I think the Peter Jackson LOTR is really good, even though I missed Tom Bombadil (but thought it was proper to leave him out).
20. What movies make you really laugh?
The first Austin Powers movie; the Abbot and Costello movies; old bad horror and sci-fi movies. Everything Mel Brooks / Gene Wilder / Madeline Kahn ever made (probably not literally true, but not far from the truth).
21. What movies get you weepy?
Oh, gosh, I cry easily. I cry at Kodak commercials.
22. Any movies that you're a little embarrassed that you like so much?
Old Disney movies. Major League.
