So I followed a link in a locked post to the Open-source Boob Project, and here's how my thinking went:

1) Wonder if I should post to my friendslist "Yes, you may".

2) Well, but should I friends-lock it?

3) Well, but then I should really remove anyone from my friendslist that I don't want touching my boobs.

4) Well, no, because I can say no to them. But wouldn't it be funny to just post an open post saying "If I drop you from my friendslist in the next day or so, it's because I don't want you touching my boobs"?

Anyway, Yes, you can. Ask, that is. I'm likely to say "You can touch my boobs; it's no big deal."

A vested space that is exclusive is a space in which you decide who comes in and who stays out.

Ok, but...where's the problem? Choose who comes in and stays out for oneself. And other people will make the same choice for themselves, and may choose to be more open. It's not like wearing the 'yes you can ask' button meant 'and I'll say yes'. It seems to have meant 'you can ask, and I'll think about it', with the further expectation that those asking would accept rejection without rancor.

What he said is that it's not necessarily healthy for your own body to always be a vested space that is exclusive.

Like in some situations it might be healthier for a bunch of random congoers to decide who touches you and who doesn't, for example.

I think our difference is the 'random congoers decide who touches you'. Cos, I see it as 'you decide if you're open to requests to be touched, and then you decide on each individual request, if you're willing to let that person touch you.'
And, I can certainly think of situations in which people choosing to not let their body be touched could be unhealthy for them. It's not all situations, which ferret said, but such situations do exist. And, the fact that the choice the person is making is such a situation is a less healthy one than they might make, doesn't mean they can't make that unhealthy choice.

Well, while I can certainly think of situations in which having random congoers you don't know grope you could be an extremely healthy and fun decision, I must admit I'm having trouble thinking of one in which preventing random congoers from groping you would be an unhealthy decision.

I mean, unless they were going to kill you otherwise, or something.

But that's really not the point. The point is that that's not what he said there. An exclusive space is one in which the owner is making the decisions as to who comes in and who stays out. I understand what you're saying, and what you're saying is a lot better, because what he said is that it's not always healthy to be the one to decide for your own body who comes in and who stays out.

No, he said that the decisions made aren't always healthy, not that deciding isn't always healthy.

Well, I think this clears up the question about how we are reading this differently.

I think he said "attitude," not "decision," but otherwise I read it the same way you do.

I cannot get over HOW HEINLEIN this whole thing was from the beginning.

Or: why I hate Heinlein!

Right down to the tone of the writing and the shining faces of the women, their shy assent, their perky happiness!

See, now it's a shame that WisCon programming is closed, b/c I really would love to see a panel entitled "The Open Source Boob Project, Or Why I Hate Heinlein."

It will go with "Dinosaur Stomping and the Hegemony," the one I dreamed about the other day.

The spontaneous programming room (Conference Room 1) will be open and available for impromptu panels at WisCon. Signup opens with registration. There's even paper & markers and shiny stuff that can be used to make flyers.

Hee :) I'm the programming co-chair. I know :)

I'll let other people make the flyers and such, though. I'm pooped.
