I have a problem with kids-in-peril stories. I can't read them, either. I tried to read Bastard out of Carolina, and just could not force myself to do it, even though I know it's important. The only way I handled Anne Frank was because her language was so grown-up.
I've read some of her other stuff, but I just couldn't with that one, even before the car scene. It's just my worst nightmare for a kid to be in danger and no one is there -- or no one cares -- to save her. It kept me up nights when the Munchkins were small, and still does from time to time. It's bringing tears to my eyes now.
But it (actually, I think it's the following episode, since they're a set) has my own personal Dr. Who Defining Line. I like the episode pair a lot better looking back at it than I did while watching it through.
and what i find amusing is, the two scariest episodes of the new Dr Who were written by the man who wrote and created one of the funnies comedies on the BBC ever - Coupling.
Some books like Bastard out of Carolina where the child survives and gets to tell their story and be considered worthy of telling their story I'm good with, but there are definitely other kids-in-peril books that just make me feel manipulated and dirty and not wanting to finish them.
Our train is just getting into Oakland. Home again pretty soon now!
The Empty Child was good, but I didn't find it that creepy. Blink... *shiver* That one is creepy!
I must say a majority of the last few seasons of Dr. Who have been really good. If you like/watch Torchwood, then you'll enjoy more of what's to come as the series continues. :)
