25 If you could receive a $1000 gift card from any store, which would you choose?

Zion market (pan-Asian, chiefly Korean, grocery store nearish me)

26 It’s Thank You Note Day/Boxing Day. Do you write hand-written thank-you notes or do you thank people for gifts in some other way?

I don't receive a lot of gifts (because people who know me know I don't require them), but I do love and appreciate receiving gifts, and aim to send handwritten thank-yous for them when I get them.

27 No matter what holidays you do (or do not) celebrate, do you have a good recipe for leftovers? Post it!

I have a couple:

The day after every "roast holiday" we have hash, but it's not a strict recipe. I dice onions and potatoes in a tiny dice, then fry them up with tiny dices of whatever meat was roasted, butter, salt, pepper. Cook on medium low stirring infrequently until it's crisp and mostly cohesive. I like mine with a fried egg and usually a bit of sriracha. James likes his with ketchup.

Leftover rice always gets turned into fried rice for breakfast, preferably kimchi fried rice, but if there's no kimchi (or no bacon), then just garlic fried rice. Again, I like this with a fried-in-sesame-oil egg and a squirt of sriracha.

28 Do you usually make a special effort to thank someone who does you a favor? How do you react when you aren't thanked for going out of your way for someone?

I might make a little too big of a deal out of thanking people when they are nice to me, because it is very hard for me to accept that without making a big deal of it. I don't worry too much about being thanked myself, but sometimes I do notice and wonder if I should say something; I rarely do. My mom always said "give without remembering and receive without forgetting" and I have some of that ingrained in me, modulo my terrible long-term memory.

29 Would you rather your life have a rewind button or a pause button?

Rewind.

30 If you could change one bad habit you have, what would it be?

Oh, geeze, only one? Hmm. Let's say I would be better at keeping in touch with people I care about.

23 Do you think you will be making any New Year’s resolutions in January?

I don't make resolutions, but I am starting a new project on January 1st that will presumably last the whole year, so it's kind of the same.

24 Do you prefer to receive money/gift cards or an actual gift?

An actual gift, even if it's super-cheap, free, homemade, or intangible. Even when I was dirt-broke, I felt this way. Money feels practical to me, and it's not a bad gift. I do appreciate it and all, but it isn't exciting in the way that something someone makes/does/buys especially for me is.

22. Are you a “peeker” about gifts, or do you prefer to be surprised?

Don't care. I love giving and receiving gifts, and I am TRULY TERRIBLE at keeping secrets, so I don't expect anyone else to, either.

Via [personal profile] hobbitbabe: "[personal profile] redbird reminded me of the old LJ custom of listing the first line of the first post of each month, as a way to summarize the year."

June: None

July: None

August: None

September: My mind is all over the place today.

October: Most days are... okay?

November: Dear Momma Duck, Six weeks.

Well, that was depressing. But accurate.

Later today, I will write a little about what's up with me and people I care about. Now, though, memeage.

The West Wing, where the leaders are flawed, but both well-meaning and generally competent.

I want to write, but I don't wanna think hard, as it's been a long and thinky day, so this survey from [personal profile] julian via [personal profile] wordweaverlynn looks to be just the thing. I think they're supposed to be done 1 per day, but I'm 10 days late, so here we go with the first 10.

I just closed a half-dozen tabs that were old posts from y'all that I keep meaning to respond to. Apologies, but I have limited oomph this week, as a lot of us do.

But hey, surveys are easy.

Quarantine meme (quaranteme? quaranmeme?) picked up from [personal profile] julian who got it from [personal profile] crystalpyramid.

First line of first public post each month in 2016:

January: Just finished Nnedi Okorafor's gorgeous The Book of Phoenix.

February: Hi, geeky darlings.

March: Let's see how much energy I have left for this.

April: [no posts]

May: Up since 4 for no good reason.

June: [no posts]

July: From SundayStealing, via [personal profile] hobbitbabe, with some of her answers kept/stolen.

August: When it was important to me that there be a Green Party in California, I worked for it.

September: I know it's supposed to be Wednesdays that we do this, but I'm rarely on here on weeknights, so I decided to do it while I'm thinking of it.

October: Edit: Bill @PenzeysSpices responded immediately to point me to this: https://t.e2ma.net/webview/o0dlr/3861320930e0446feb951d5ac4db1769 which acknowledges some of my concerns.

November: Resilience [poem title]

December: This week began my two-week-and-change break from work.

Back in 2011/12, [personal profile] firecat combined a couple of different end-of-the-year survey thingies so lots of the numbers are repeated, and I think that's kind of fun, so I did it then, and I'm doing it now, with the years changed. I intend for this to become a daily journal again in 2017, so this is where I'm starting.

1. Was 2016 a good year for you?
Some things were good, but in general, no. Not very.

1. Do you like blue cheese? Only in certain moods.

From SundayStealing, via [personal profile] hobbitbabe, with some of her answers kept/stolen.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper?
I don't even remember. Long, long time.

Can you change the oil on a car?
Yes, but after a while, I realized it wasn't really cost-effective for me to do it myself.

Ever gotten a speeding ticket?
No.

Run out of gas?
No.

Favorite kind of sandwich?
I don't do sandwich-monogamy.
Tomato and mayo on soft wheat bread, with or without avocado and/or alfalfa sprouts. Butter is acceptable in place of or in addition to butter.
BLT.
Egg salad on white with celery and [green] onion and mayonnaise, nothing else.
Grilled cheese.

Best thing to eat for breakfast?
Eggs florentine, maybe? Anything with hollandaise. Fried potatoes and onions. Ooh, blintzes! Leftover dinner food. Anything but cold pizza.

What is your usual bedtime?
Some time between 10 and 11.

Are you lazy?
About some things.

When you were a kid, what did you dress up as for Halloween?
I honestly don't have any idea. Can't remember.

Do you have any magazine subscriptions?
Yes. AARP, Cooking Light. From time to time, I sub to Vegetarian Times, Poets & Writers, and Writer's Digest. And my university sends me the alumni magazine, if that counts. And KPBS sends me the one for contributors.

Which are better, legos or lincoln logs?
I like 'em both.

Are you stubborn?
About some things. Mostly, I'm pretty flexible.

Who is better, Leno or Letterman?
I find Letterman (problematic fave) hilarious, and Leno annoys me like nails on chalkboards.

Ever watch soap operas?
In high school, during the summers, I watched three hours a day. One Life to Live, All My Children, and General Hospital. This was during Luke & Laura's young "courtship."

Afraid of heights?
Some. Nervous about them always, genuinely phobic about it when I feel I'm in an unprotected high place (side of a mountain, high building without sufficient railing, etc.).

Sing in the car?
SO much. Even did it a little on my vlog the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEXlKCsJ01I

Dance in the shower?
No. I'm an accident waiting to happen. That would end badly.

Dance in the car?
Silly.

Ever used a gun?
Yes, in JROTC.

Do you think musicals are cheesy?
Some are. I love them.

Is Christmas stressful?
Not any more.

Ever eat a pierogi?
Oh yes. Love them.

Major annoyance right now?
That I have to go to work in 20 minutes.

Occupations you wanted to be when you were a kid?
Singer. That's it.

Do you believe in ghosts?
Nope.

What. A. Week!

I say that a lot these days, don't I? But oh, man, whatta week. I won a prize and met Lorna Dee Fucking Cervantes, wrote three papers, including a short story, navigated some potentially dramatic relationship stuff that didn't turn out to be (oh, yeah, I forgot I chose low-drama family members), finished week 3 of 10 at school, got offered a full-time position at work doing the same job I'm doing now part-time, at which I worked my ASS off this week, and it's only Thursday!

Saturday is Cal Day, and I've committed to making cookies for it. The kid was gonna come over tonight and make them with me, but she's not up for it, so

I

Have

An

Evening

Of

Downtime!!

(I'm gonna chip away at my homework, but I have until Monday before anything's due, James is making dinner, and oh, goodness, downtime!)

And you didn't think I wouldn't do some silly survey thingies, did you? Here's one from submarine_bells )

1. Was 2011 a good year for you?
It was good enough for me, but very very very hard.

I stole some of her answers, too.

1. Is there someone in your life you know you'd be better off without?
Counting "in my life" as people I interact with regularly—no. Wow, how fortunate I am.

Survey snagged from [personal profile] firecat, along with some of her answers. I'm waiting for the meds to kick in. I turned 22 pounds of fresh tomatoes into mountains of lovely stuff, and I feel mighty for having done it, but now I'm completely wrung out.
