The email I just sent to our landlady:

Hi, [Name],

A few days, we found some odd brown schmutz (that's a technical term ;-) on the ceiling in the bedroom. We wiped it off, but it returned, and today we looked closer. It matched this description online, and I think it means there are termites in our ceiling.

I was concerned about my daddylonglegs "infestation" (three in one day). The cats now have new friends and playmates, but termites? YIKES.

We've been through two termite infestations. They're so common here in the East Bay (and in most parts of the Bay Area), it's almost inevitable that any building containing wood is going to end up with an infestation.
