Aug. 16th, 2008 12:55 pmThe first time I talked to
stonebender on the phone, his dog Gilly started barking, and scared the bejeebus out of me. I had always been afraid of dogs, and Dobermans, even silly ones like Gilly, sound really scary when they bark.
stonebender and I were a bit nervous about how this would affect our in-person visits, and she was in her crate the first time I visited. Then when everything calmed down a little, he let her out, she galumphed across the floor, and something remarkable happened -- not only did I fall instantly in love with this dog who acted like an addled toddler, but I lost my fear of dogs. Very amazing and silly dog, this Gillygirl.
And now she's sick, and had a vet appointment, and I don't know what's up, and she might be nearing the end of her life, and I'm just so fretful about it. I met her when she was young -- 4, I think -- and now she's old, and there's never been a time in my relationship with
stonebender when she wasn't a factor.
I'm not generally sentimental about animals, but I don't want to think about losing the Gillygirl. :-(

Date: 2008-08-16 08:33 pm (UTC)Clancy has been gallantly ignoring the fact he is not a young dog for some time. So, frankly, we mostly ignore it too, until something catches us off-guard like the neighbor's young and bouncy girl dog trying to get the old man to romp. And just four or five years ago he would have romped. Now he tussles happily for a few minutes then gives me this 'kids, eh?' shrug.
He saves his romping energy for time with
Sometimes when the light falls just right and I really notice how silver he's gone around the muzzle it just floors me. With the heat wave we've had this past week I've turned down social stuff so we wouldn't have to leave him alone in the house for too long without his cool-down drenching. Because this summer, unlike last, he's actually a canine senior citizen and he feels the heat stress in a way he didn't before.
