Me, to [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy, last night after I'd gone to bed: "Do me a favor, honey, and send me an email with the word 'enormousness' in it. I need to remember to make a post tomorrow."

Him: *sends the following email:*
Subject: as requested

Enormousness 8=========D

Which made me laugh, but also reminded me to tell [personal profile] vito_excalibur that Jonathan Kellerman is clearly her soul-brother, because at least four times in this book of his that I'm reading, he writes "enormousness" where these days you just KNOW the writer would say "enormity".

It seemed important at midnight last night. :-)

After extensive research (I looked both words up at m-w.com) I'm left with the feeling that there isn't a significant difference between the two words. (Or, at least, such a small difference that, given the chance, I'd use the one that sounded coolest to me at the time.)

What distinction do you draw between them?
