I don't care that much about the whole turning-of-the-year thing, but I like surveys, so here goes:

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Stayed at a permanent job long enough to get a raise; got accepted at Cal State East Bay; rode on a train.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions; I just keep trying to live a good life. Resolutions, for me, are a chance to set up unrealistic goals and then spend lots of time feeling bad about not meeting them. I'm happier when I just try to live a good life.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yep.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
I stayed in the US this year, as I do most years.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
My own laptop computer.

7. What date(s) from 2010 will remain etched your memory, and why?
Hmm. I don't have any dates from this year hard-wired in my brain right now. My brain does tend to remember dates, but this year, I can't think of any.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting into college!

9. What was your biggest failure?
I'd rather not talk about it in public.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yep. As I get older and older, it gets more and more frequent.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
[personal profile] james_huber's dental work, hands dow

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My whole family gets my admiration for making it through another really rough year.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
My sister's.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Food. Utilities. Medical bills.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
SCHOOL!!

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2010?
I don't connect songs with periods of time until long after the period of time is over.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
I don't know.
ii. thinner or fatter? A lot fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? About the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I'd managed to keep the magazine running. I may still revive it. I loved it so much.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stressing about unimportant things.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
We had an early Christmas, exchanging a few small gifts and eating food the kid wanted. That's about it.

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Nope.

23. How many one-night stands?
None, not that I'd necessarily tell you if I'd had them.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
All year? Probably the John Lithgow season of Dexter, which we're still watching.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope. I don't actually hate anyone, though there are a couple people I wish were completely out of my life and my kids' lives.

26. What was the best book you read?
I read quite a few books this year. Mostly trashy murder mysteries, but several pieces of nonfiction and a few non-trashy-murder-mystery novels. Probably the best one was [personal profile] pameladean's Tam Lin.

27. What was/were your greatest musical discoveries?
I have been really grooving on Pomplamoose.

28. What did you want and get?
Did I mention yet that I got into COLLEGE?

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Inception.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I honestly don't remember what I did. I was 44. Still am, actually.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If the family could have stayed healthy for even a week at a time, with no major health crises.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
I wouldn't. I don't spend much mental energy on such things, or really have the vocabulary for it. I like girly clothes, especially in slinky fabrics, and if I didn't have enormous feet, I'd also be a total shoe slut, but I'm not.

34. What kept you sane?
Probably my general tendency toward sanity.  It also didn't hurt that I have a large, supportive, and mostly sane family.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Can't think of anyone offhand.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Security theater and the damage it does to actua

37. Who did you miss?
[personal profile] stonebender and my mother

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Dorie Greenspan

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
No one except me cares if I have a clean and comfortable house all the time, but I care IMMENSELY about it, so it's still worth doing.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

I'll take it from here
I'll succeed or I will fail but I will decide
I'll take it from here
Catch my breath and count to ten and
Open my eyes
Again

My father's plans my mother's fears
My own fine day
Are careening past my reach and my control
You can take your love and keep your money but
Not my will and not my way
At least every mistake will be my own

I like surveys too, and when I get home and have time to think, I'm gonna do this one.
