Worth it -- but is it worth *applying for*?
Date: 2011-05-04 07:32 pm (UTC)I could do that job, and be great at it. I also have all the necessary prereqs -- except two: an advanced degree, and current paid experience.
My experience applying for jobs at large institutions is that the prereqs list is a *minimum*; that without an advanced degree and current paid experience my application won't even get looked at by a human being, much less seriously considered.
I'd sent out something over 12K such applications before I gave up on looking and started doing volunteer work and building my own independent career.
If you're volunteering to be of *active assistance* in getting this job, I'm willing to craft 'em a custom resume and cover letter and start calling and networking with people. If not, perhaps I should stay here in Oregon.
What do you think?
best,
Joel

Date: 2011-05-04 08:15 pm (UTC)WAIV position
Date: 2011-05-18 12:23 am (UTC)What a coincidence -- I'm currently in the process of applying for this position and couldn't be more excited about it! I actually came across your blog while doing some online digging for details on the office culture at Cal's DSP. It sounds like you're loving your job there! I also noticed we share some connections on LinkedIn (along with a penchant for country music singer-songwriters!) and I've requested an introduction. I'd love to have a chance to connect with you to hear your thoughts on what makes DSP at Cal such a great place to work.

Re: WAIV position
Date: 2011-05-18 12:54 am (UTC)Nice to meet you! It's a wonderful place to work, with the caveat that there's some tension around layoffs (euphemistically called "operational excellence" and restructuring. Prior to this semester, it didn't hit our department very hard, but that's changing, so some of us who still have jobs have some survivor guilt going on. That said, there aren't that many places in this world where you can see yourself making a real difference every single day, and this job is one of them. Best of luck!
