5K!

I've been walking more and more, with the goal of walking a 5K. Not a race or anything, just 5K at a time. But my 5-week (so-called) 5K training program has stalled at week 3, and I needed some incentive, so I registered for a 5K fun run/walk in San Francisco in February. I'm a slow walker, so if I finish this in an hour or less, I'll be happy.

Anyone want to join me? I promise not to mind if you leave me in the dust. :-)

It's hard for me to justify paying money for this, to Kaiser which doesn't need it. But if it doesn't fill up, check with me again closer to the time. I'd love to do the walk with you!

Yeah, I get that. It's the "paying money to walk" part that's trapping me.

That sounds like fun. If I were nearer I would of course come walk with you!

Not something I can commit to right now, but great idea! I was shocked how motivating it was to sign up for this kind of thing.

Also goddamn I love your tag. :D

Me, too! I'm totally stealing it when I finally get around to using tags.

I totally had trouble with that doing the organized bike rides that I love so much. But thinking about all the organizational effort and expense made it easier for me. Also to distinguish that I was paying for the opportunity to hang out in community, not so much for the opportunity to ride my bike. I dunno--it's kind of like saying going to FOGcon is "paying money to talk."

I really like these points. And I'll probably end up walking with [personal profile] serene because I love Serene and I like walking and I have money.

But ...

Money to a convention goes to the small organization putting on the convention, and winds up funding the next convention. Money to this walk goes to Kaiser, which is my medical care provider of choice, and of which I have in many ways a high opinion. I'm also aware, though, that Kaiser has record--and extremely high--profits, even though it's a "nonprofit." Their CEO makes the kind of salary that bank CEOs make. And they keep raising rates and in some cases stinting care to keep their profits and upper-end salaries high. So it's difficult for me. In any case, I'm not giving them money until I see how the current strike potential develops.
