December 12: The year in questions

sereneI haven't done these in a few years, and I'm not sure why, because I love them. Thanks to jae for posting hers so I would remember to do it:
1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before?
Crocheted a scarf
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't do resolutions. I mostly just try to do my best as life goes on.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I can think of. My grand-nibling (also known as The Giant Toddler Baby) was born late in 2013.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, but several people in my circles lost people dear to them.
5. What countries did you visit?
I stayed put this year.
6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?
Well, I had a paying job for most of 2014, but I lack one right now, and I'd really like to have one soon. Sooner than 2015, if possible.
7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The only date that comes to mind is September 26th, my last day at The Best Job Ever.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Either moving to San Diego to support my mom and uncle, or hiring someone really capable to succeed me at The Best Job Ever.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I really tanked one of my job interviews.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Mostly just exacerbations of chronic stuff, but I have had two bouts of hypoglycemia, which I haven't dealt with since I was a teenager.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I reserved a hotel room for my kid so she has a place of her own to stay while she visits her father this weekend. (She and her brother do not get along, and I was dreading the thought of her staying with them.)
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
The Ebola fighters! So glad to see them as Time's Person of the Year.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Police in Ferguson and NYC and Berkeley and and and...
14. Where did most of your money go?
Honestly, to eating out. We are kitchenless (and my mom's kitchen scares me -- food-safety and cleanliness issues that we're slowly getting a handle on) and have been since we moved, so I've been racking up debt eating at restaurants and fast-food joints, buying prepared foods, etc.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Being near my mom.
16. What song will always remind you of 2014?
My brain doesn't work that way.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
ii. thinner or fatter? Right now I'm fatter, but my weight bounced around a lot (by which I mean "frequently, but within a relatively small and not-concerning range") this year.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
The labor involved in the renovations. James is doing most of it, and I can't tolerate much physical labor.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Impulse spending.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
James and I are discussing that. I'd like to just spend the day off someplace by ourselves. I don't enjoy big family holiday gatherings.
21. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve?
We usually are asleep before midnight, but we will be picking up the kid at the airport in the afternoon, so we may be up late that night this time.
22. Did you fall in love in 2014?
Nope.
23. How many one-night stands?
Still don't do that.
24. What was your favourite TV program?
Hmm. Probably Last Tango in Halifax.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nah.
26. What was the best book you read?
No earthly idea.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
So typical of me because they've been broken up for a super long time, but Digable Planets.
28. What did you want and get?
To move to be near mom.
29. What did you want and not get?
A job.
30. What was your favourite film that you saw for the first time this year?
Netflix says the only movie I watched that was new to me this year was Inequality for All (the rest was mostly episodes of TV shows).
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I worked, and I turned 48.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being able to keep my job (preferably with my former bosses) and still be near my mom.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?
I am learning to embrace the business-casual look.
34. What kept you sane?
James. Always James.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I don't exactly "fancy" public figures, but I have been really admiring Ta-Nehisi Coates.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Ferguson / I Can't Breathe
37. Who did you miss?
(As much as I miss anyone, which I don't really tend to do, because my brain is wired weirdly):stonebender, loracs, my kid
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Not sure about "best," but I'm enjoying meeting my mom's friends from the senior center.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014.
I've thought and thought about this, but I don't think I did learn any lessons this year, actually. I had a few I already knew reinforced, but that's not the same thing.
