Notes from The Best Job Ever
Sep. 3rd, 2009 12:37 pmBudget cuts are huge here (systemwide, at my campus, and in my department) and do you know how I know I work at The Best Job Ever? The staff in my department are planning a bake sale to create an emergency fund for our students.
In case you don't know, I work in the Disabled Students' Program office at UC Berkeley. Our students are going to be hit pretty hard by the budget crunch, as you can imagine. This fund will just be a quick-access, small-amounts thing -- for example, say a student is $35 short on what she needs to buy her books, or someone just needs a little money because his state check hasn't come in yet.
We've been brainstorming in the department about ways to help our students during this crisis. If you have any ideas about how to add to this fund so that students with disabilities at Cal can have a little tiny safety net, sock it to me.
A co-worker and I are cackling over the image of a big news story on how college students with disabilities need a frickin' bake sale to make ends meet. Wonder if the Governator would care about that?
(Oh, and my lunch? A pint each of excellent figs and even more excellent heirloom grape tomatoes. Happy girl is happy.)
