Some women go under general to have them. My doctor sprung one on me at my last annual exam. It was over quickly, thank goodness (and it was negative). I didn't expect that much pain or I would have been a lot more frightened. But I still gather that I had less pain than many women do. Maybe I'm used to it from having IUDs stuck in me.
