You are invited to an Orphans' Thanksgiving at our house. If you haven't got family nearby, or just want someplace welcoming to be for T-day, please join us.

Thursday, November 25, 2004
Dinner is at 3pm -- arrive any time between noon and 9pm, stay as long as you like. If we know you, you're welcome to spend the night. (There are two full-sized guest beds and a king-sized air mattress, in addition to tons of floor space.)

Our planned menu follows, subject to change on Serene's whim. This isn't a potluck, so you don't have to bring anything. However, if you don't see something on the menu that just says Thanksgiving to you, you can either bring it yourself or tell us about it and we'll try to fix it for you.

There's a TV in the bedroom -- if you need to follow some sporting event or other, you may do so in there, but there's not a lot of seating in there (there's a king-sized bed and an armchair).

RSVP is very helpful, but not essential. If you need our telephone number and/or address, then you will need to RSVP in order to get those.

Planned menu (any/all items may be substituted with something Serene feels more like making):

Baked winter squash and sweet potatoes (vegan)
Mashed potatoes (lacto vegetarian)
Corn (vegan)
Turkey and stuffing and gravy
A separate, vegan version of the stuffing
Homemade cranberry sauce (and possibly Mama Stamberg's cranberry relish)
A big salad
Pumpkin pecan pie (lacto-ovo vegetarian)
Relish tray and assorted munchies (chips/dip, nuts, pickles, olives, veggies, and probably celery stuffed with cheese)
Pumpkin soup served in a pumpkin shell (vegan)
Assorted beverages (probably Italian sodas, eggnog, tea, coffee, etc. -- lots of sugar-free options, lots of vegan options)

Mmmm, sounds delicious. Too bad I'm way over here (though I'll be going home for a delicious thanksgiving of my own). What's your recipe for pumpkin soup, if I might ask? I miss it so, having become somewhat addicted to it in Austria (though none of the variations I encountered there were vegan, given the tendancy to put cream into almost everything)

I don't use a recipe. I cook pumpkin, onions, celery, and carrots in salted water (with a bay leaf) until they're smooshy and then I pull the bay leaf out and puree the stuff. Sometimes I add any or several of the following: coconut milk, curry powder, rice, rice milk, soy milk, a tablespoon of peanut butter, other herbs/spices (in the case of any of the preceding, I might leave out the bay leaf), diced potatoes, sweet potatoes -- whatever I feel like, have handy, etc. Pumpkin is very versatile, and it's never turned out badly.

I need to RSVP, then, having yet to have the pleasure of visiting your home.
