Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] kightp, who gakked it from [livejournal.com profile] saxikath. I can see I'm going to steal at least one answer.

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Totalled my car. Took emergency contraception. Competed in the Berkeley poetry slam. Bought a laser printer. Quit my job -- actually, not one, but two jobs. Cooked a turkey. Watched someone die. Found out I had a tumor. Played Apples to Apples. Met several people I hadn't met before. Traveled to another city for a job interview. Had a laptop computer of my very own.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Nah, I don't bother with new year's resolutions. Haven't for decades.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yep.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My mother-out-law died on October 6th.

5. What countries did you visit?
I didn't do much traveling this year, just lots of moving and a visit back home.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
I would say "a job with health benefits", but I'm also really enjoying being a full-time writer and housefrau, so I'm not sure. Oh -- I know! I would like to have enough stories published that I don't have to go find a "real" job.

7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
This year has been so busy and happy that specific dates don't come to mind.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
The biggest physical chore was moving. My biggest accomplishment overall has been continuing to choose my life the way I need it to be, rather than the way I think others want it to be.

9. What was your biggest failure?

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I've been dealing with some chronic stuff, and I injured myself pretty badly at the most recent job, but nothing overly serious.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Oh, gosh. The laser printer? The barstools? The netflix membership? God, I feel rich!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My partners: [livejournal.com profile] sogwife handled her mother's death with strength and grace. [livejournal.com profile] stonebender is more of an activist (and presidential candidate!) than I'll ever be. [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy blows me away with his interactions with his fundies.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Pretty much the entire Bush administration. The extreme cultural/religious right.

14. Where did most of your money go?
To the usual grownup things: Rent, food, household maintenance. With enough left over to fly the kids up here for xmas and buy a few things we've been wanting/needing for the house. And a *huge* amount towards my COBRA payments.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Living in the Bay Area. I'm *still* really, really excited about it.

16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
My brain doesn't let me know those things until later on.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
I. happier or sadder? How about "just as happy"? Sad things happen, and have happened this year, but overall my life remains a generally happy and content one.
II. thinner or fatter? Thinner
III. richer or poorer? I have less money, but I'm a lot richer. A *lot*.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing. Always writing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Worrying about money.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Flying down to San Diego with one Munchkin and bringing the other back up afterwards.

21. [like last year, there is no question 21]

22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
Nope, unless you count being continually in love with my loves.

23. How many one-night stands?
None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
West Wing.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I'm drawing a blank on this one.

28. What did you want and get?
A cute apartment in walking distance from the Berkeley Bowl.

29. What did you want and not get?
A permanent position in HR at FedEx.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Probably Osama, but I'll perhaps think of others later. Was the third LOTR this year or last?

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I cooked for my family ([livejournal.com profile] stonebender, Carol, Betty, [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises, [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy, and [livejournal.com profile] intenselaura, who gave me the huge gift of flying out here that week. I turned 38.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
A teleporter.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Heh. "Serene-y." I wear what I like, but I cobble it together from stuff I get free from people. I haven't bought new clothes in a really long time.

34. What kept you sane?
My partners. My general bent (heh) towards sanity. The support of my mom and the munchkins. My partners. Did I mention my partners?

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmm. I don't tend to get celebrity crushes, but I sure was hoping to call Howard Dean "Commander-in-Chief".

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The growing threats to civil liberties in the US.

37. Who did you miss?
[livejournal.com profile] intenselaura. My mother. The Munchkins. [livejournal.com profile] stonebender. [livejournal.com profile] lcohen. [livejournal.com profile] firecat. [livejournal.com profile] porcinea. TOTGA. Cute-poet-chick.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I don't think that way. I've met a really lot of cool people this year, though.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
Not being able to maintain a friendship doesn't mean anyone doesn't care about anyone.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

It's a tie:

But for now, I'm out at the hideout,
far enough outside of town
You can come, you can stay, if there's something you need to get away from

and:

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me and I will write you a song

Not that crying with/on you (or letting you do likewise on me) isn't part of the beauty that has been our relationship, but I have to say that it was nice to spend some non-tearful time together this time. *smooch*
