My turn to flatter [livejournal.com profile] kightp and steal a survey from her.

1. What did you learn from your parents?

From my mother:

A love of language.
How to cook, to love food, to try new foods, to joyfully feed people, to shop -- some of the most useful things in my life.
That I would be beautiful if I weren't fat (I unlearned that one. Mostly.).
Love of a good song lyric.
Many old songs.
A love of playing cards.
Many strange sayings (that I inflict upon my partners all the time).
That it's dangerous to anger people, and nearly as dangerous to disappoint them.
That now that I'm grown, she needs me more than I need her.
That I can be friends with someone with whom I have a difficult history.

From my father:

A love of board games and puzzles.
That saying "I was gonna" isn't the same as having gotten the job done.
Get-rich-quick books will not make one rich.
I can take care of myself.
It's bad/risky to ask for anything from someone, because it hurts when they say no (I'm unlearning this one slowly).
Lots of '60s folk songs.

From their marriage:

I'm not sure. I guess I learned about peaceful coexistence and keeping disagreements from the children, because my parents never -- not once -- argued/fought in my presence, not until the day my dad came home and said they were breaking up effective immediately.

Things I wish I'd learned from them:

How to face things instead of avoiding them.
Life skills around money and housekeeping.

2. What things did your parents argue about when you were little?

Nothing. Ever. (My dad was gone a *lot*, so that may partially explain it.)

3. Who is the most serious person in your family?

In our own ways, every person in my family would qualify as the most serious.

4. What family member do you take after the most?

Both emotionally and physically, my father. My baby brother and I are both spitting images of him, and my temperament and his are eerily similar. So are his and [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy's, which is why my stepmom says I married my father. It's more like I married my twin.

5. Has anyone in your family been divorced?

My parents (mom twice if you count an annulment, dad once); my sister (twice); me (once, though it wasn't a legal marriage or a legal divorce). None of my partners has been divorced, and my brothers have both been married since 1992.

Oh, strange sayings! I got those from my mom, too!

"She was so buck-toothed she could bite a pumpkin through a picket fence."
