I have always joked that I make a terrible hippychick because I can't bake bread, I can't grow plants, and I don't like herbal tea. Well, I still don't like herbal tea, but thanks to [livejournal.com profile] alanbostick, I've successfully made one batch of sourdough bread, and now I have *plants*. And they're alive, and thriving, and taking over my apartment. There are nine of them, not counting the salsa garden. For those of you who like those things, I've posted pictures and a little narrative about my babies over in my picture area. *preen* Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] eeyore_grrl, whose housewarming gift was the start of it all.

In other news, I knitted! [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises, while she was being all charming and hosty last night, taught me to knit, and I was able to do it. I was so excited I couldn't stop burbling about it, and I made [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy stop on the way home to look at my little deformed worm of knitting. I am so fucking excited about this! I will practice and practice, and now that I know how to hold stuff, the videos online will help -- before, they just confused me. [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises is a most excellent knitting teacher, and a MOST excellent friend. I've missed her, and I adored being able to natter her ear off last night. Plus she made rice with Penzey's spices that was very yummy.

Well by that measure I'm only about 1/2 a hippychick myself. :^) I can bake good bread; like herbal tea as much as I like any tea, which is to say I'll drink it (as opposed to coffee, which I loathe); and I kill plants on a regular basis. I NEED my commune, obviously, because on my own we'd starve.

Congrats on the knitting, too! Another farm skill my grandma tried to teach me, which didn't take. :^)

Knitting is cool. And the Spicejar folks are wonderful friends. I know I'm the only one who calls them by their domain name, but otherwise it would be "those poker-playing, gourmet-cooking, SF-editing, process-working cool people who know everybody and incidentally give great hugs." Or I suppose I could just say "[livejournal.com profile] wild_irises and [livejournal.com profile] alanbostick," and all the readers who are lucky enough to know them would fill in the blanks.

Cool! New achievements, new skills, great times with friends -- about as good as it gets!

[livejournal.com profile] someotherguy sometimes teases me about the opposite: Before we moved here, I was a vegan, I wore Birkenstocks exclusively, and didn't own a pair of socks or an item of makeup. Nowadays, I'm likely to be wearing tights and/or socks, I sometimes wear makeup, and I eat meat. :-) It's fun letting my style decide itself without imposing too many rules upon it, but it confuses the people I live with. :-)

My time on the commune was one of the happiest of my life. These days, I think I'm way too much of a control freak about my space and my stress levels to do it, but maybe...

It's very, very quiet here - almost eerie. There's only 3 of us in the Studio today plus [livejournal.com profile] stonebender, who is spending the day at my office reading his book. Occasionally I hear my coworker an office away cause her chair squeaks. Overall not a bad day. I even like the weather - rain and all!
