Songs and memories
Jun. 30th, 2005 12:07 amSome songs remind me of certain people, but some songs are more specific and take me back to specific events. I feel like talking about some of them tonight. Bear with me.
"The Night Chicago Died" reminds me of walking in Rock Lake (Connecticut) with my sister. One of my rare good memories of her. All my good memories of her involve music. Another is the Carpenters' "Top of the World," which we learned to sing in harmony when we were in choir together in high school. And yet another is a song in Spanish called "No Llores, Mi Nino", which we learned when we were in choir in Spain.
"Come Away With Me," by Norah Jones, reminds me of lying in bed with
someotherguy when things were really hard for both of us, talking about running away together. Eventually, we did. We ran away, but really we ran to a life I am much happier in, and almost never feel like running away from.
"Power of Two," by Indigo Girls, reminds me of driving with my hand on cute-poet-chick's knee after a particularly difficult argument. After that, it was our song for when the arguing was over.
"Three Times a Lady" reminds me of the time a boy asked me to dance at the junior-high dance, and when I said yes, he laughed and went back to his friends to mock me.
"Marvelous Toy," by Peter, Paul, & Mary, reminds me of sitting in the middle of our living-room floor when I was a child while my dad adjusted the quadrophonic sound on his new reel-to-reel setup.
"Let the Mystery Be" reminds me of when Natalie Merchant went offstage at the end of the 10,000 Maniacs concert and sang that song a capella, curling my toes.
"Starting Over Again," by Dolly Parton, reminds me of the night my dad told my mom he was divorcing her.
And the song that was playing while I was raped, I can never remember except when I hear it. Then I remember, and then when it's over, I forget again what it was. Weird.
