I'm not ready to elevate Rall to godhood. Outside the Bay area some weight is being assigned to the fact, acknowledged by Wilson, that Plame hadn't been a covert agent in six years.
Still, Rove was wrong. He was not in her chain of command and the decision to bring up her identity was not his. I believe that as damaged goods he should be fired. People get fired for making bad decisions every day. I'll even go so far as to say that if a grand jury finds sufficient cause that he should go to trial. I don't have any illusions that he'd find his way to Leavenworth before an outgoing President tossed him a late November pardon. With the aforementioned Grand Jury hearing, a trial, appeals, and all the usual delays he'd be left with just enough time beside the tennis court to write his book before his release.
The upside for the Republican party is that a conviction would eliminate any temptation for them to utilize him in future campaigns. Instead he'll land at some cable channel where he can snipe from the sidelines a la Liddy, Stephanopolis, and dozens of other unsavory types.
The system is broken. There are no lasting consequences when you reach a certain power plateau. Heck, John McCain is still perennially considered as the least distasteful Republican by many, many people who've forgotten the name Keating. Hillary Clinton won a Senate seat despite her uncanny insight into cattle futures.
Nah, they're all scum. Some are just sharp enough never to be convicted.
