So it looks like the joint dryadgrl-and-serene birthday party
will probably be at a park and pool in Oakland, and that the swimming
portion will be from 5-7pm (on Saturday, 9/17). Questions:

1) Do you think the picnic portion should be before or after the pool
portion? Before means I don't have to figure out food storage during the
pool part. After means the kids don't have to wait for swimming until
after food, and people don't have to swim having just eaten. (Of course, I
could just do all nonperishable foods and folks could eat before *and*
after, and another option is to have it catered, but that's probably outside
our budget at the moment.)

2) Do you think you'll be able to come? Trying to get a rough headcount
so that we can know how many lifeguards to get.

That's all the details there are at the moment. I will post something more detailed when it's paid for (this week some time), but basically, pool/picnic party. dryadgrl is turning 30, and I'm turning 39 (within a day of each other), and we love each other and parties, so we're doing it together.

If I were throwing the party, I might go with the before-and-after option: feed people something at the beginning, do the swimming part, and then bust out birthday cake (or whatever) at the end. One of my rules of party-throwing seems to be that there must always be food (specifically, too much food) on hand whenever anyone might possibly want it. :-) But if that's too complicated, I'd pick after, for mostly the reasons you mention--I figure people will be happier gorging themselves after swimming than vice versa... However, it doesn't seem worth making your life more difficult to do it that way. If storage on-site is too complicated, might it work to have a few people slip out half an hour before swimming ends, pick up the food from a convenient nearby location, and bring it to the park?

The only reason I'd vote for food before is the weather issue. After 7pm it is more likely to be cool/cold for some folks in the park. We never really know about our weather. Which pool and which park? Does the park have fun stuff for the kids (of all ages) to do, i.e. playground things or games? Course food before and after is okay too, if it doesn't complicate it too much. Let me know how I can help.
