I dunno how a slacker such as I ended up semi-regularly working 60 hours a
week, but it Must End. :-) I'm actually not minding it, but I miss my
fambly, and I miss doing things like making regular hot meals and
puttering around my apartment. I like having a little money to catch up
on finances, but it's not really worth it in the long run. In the short
run, though, it's fine.

What my plan is now is to find myself a job with benefits and a steadier
schedule. Looking at positions at Cal, as well as other stuff. I think I
have an edge at Cal because I'm already here and have a good working
relationship with the people here. If I could find a way to have benefits
and still see my sweeties more often than once a blue moon, that would be
great. I have benefits at Ikea, but the hours and pay are such that I
cannot manage to make enough money to live on without working sixty hours
a week. Not good. If I could afford to, I would just quit and find a way
to get benefits privately.

Another option I've considered is to wait until my benefits kick in at
Ikea, stay as long as I can, and then quit and pay for COBRA (for
non-USians, COBRA is where if you continue paying the premiums your
employer was paying, you can remain on your employer's health coverage
plan). COBRA is expensive, but I can make enough money to pay for it if
I'm working a job making real money.

I need more time at home. I need benefits. I *don't* need a lot of
money, but I need enough to pay my share of the household expenses. I
think these are doable. I just gotta get off my ass and do 'em.

Remember, COBRA is only good for either 16 or 18 months, so while it will get you access to healthcare, only for a finite period. I just bought an individual plan from Blue Cross/Blue Shield for about $125 p/m. S and I are thinking about filing for domestic partnership so I can get them from her (and my old) company. Well not just for that, but you know.....

You might be able to find something more reasonable and permanent than COBRA.
