The first one I remember was the Grey Ghost a big government-looking
station wagon that was probably bought at a government surplus auction or

Slowpoke, because he was a turtle.
3. What did you want to be when you grew up?
A singer. Until my late teens, it never occurred to me that I would be
anything else.
4. What was the name of your elementary school?
I had a ton of them. Nine, I think. The last was David Glasgow Farragut
in Rota, Spain.
5. Who was your first best friend?
Kathy Granato.
6. Are you still friends today, and if not, what happened?
Havent heard from her in a few years, but she found me about ten years
back and came for a visit. She was still stuck in our childhood, which
was sad, but we had a nice time touristing around San Diego.
7. What was your favorite board game?
Monopoly, even though my brother always won. When we got a little older,
he and I played a lot of Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary.
8. Did you play house or other make believe games?
Yeah, mostly with my Barbies.
9. Were you a Dungeons and Dragons geek?
I wasnt even really clear on what Dungeons and Dragons was until I met

12. Who was the first person you looked up to when you were younger?
Harriet Tubman. I was obsessed by her. I still get all choked up when I
think of her.
13. Who was your favorite relative?
My cousin Patty, who died of breast cancer in 1994.
14. Were you short or tall in elementary school?
Always the tallest.
15. Were you teased in school?
Oh yeah.
16. What was the name of your favorite teacher?
Its so strange that I dont remember her name. Mrs. White? She taught
Mythology when I was in the 7th grade. Total hippychick, and utterly
engaged in the subject matter, about which I didnt care much except as a
reaction to her enthusiasm.
17. What was the name of your least favorite teacher?
My sixth-grade teacher, on whose name I have also blanked. It was she who
started my doesnt live up to her potential nightmares, and who made
sure I went from loving school to enduring it.
18. What was your best subject in school?
I had lots of best subjects. I did well in math, English, music, speech,
typing, and chemistry classes, but I liked pretty much everything except
for geography.
19. What was your worst subject in school?
PE.
20. Did you do well in Physical Education?
Nope. Took ROTC to get out of it when that was an option.
21. Were you clumsy when you were younger?
Yup. Still am.
22. Who was your favorite band as a kid?
Joan Baez. Harry Belafonte. Peter, Paul, & Mary. Elton John. All the
stuff my parents loved, I loved, too.
23. What was your favorite movie as a kid?
The Sound of Music, until Grease came out. Mostly musicals. My mom and I
used to watch Oklahoma and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc.
24. Did your parents read to you?
Only until I was three or four and started reading by myself. Then we
would all sit around the living room reading our own books. I especially
liked the Childcraft Encyclopedias, until I was old enough for Nancy Drew,
which then became my obsession.

26. What was your favorite restaurant as a kid?
We didnt eat in restaurants when I was a kid. My mom cooked every night.
My first restaurant meal was probably a Chinese place in Spain when I was
10 or so. Then some restaurants in Morocco on vacation when I was 11.
And then my first trip to McDonalds was when I had moved back to the
States, when I was almost 12.
27. What TV or movie star did you have a crush on?
I dont remember.

29. Who was your first crush in school?
Alex Will, whose real name was John Alex Will. He was (is?) four years,
five months, and twelve days older than I, and he was the son of my piano
teacher.
30. As a child, what kind of car did you want when you grew up?
I didn't think about it.
31. Did your parents spank you?
My mother did. My father has laid a hand on me once in my life.
32. Did your parents fight a lot when you were a kid?
Not even once.
33. Did your parents get divorced or stay married?
They divorced.
34. If they got divorced, how old were you when it happened?
Thirteen.

Yes.
36. How old were you when/if you first got glasses?

37. Did you need braces or a retainer?
Yeah. I wore braces for years, but we couldnt pay for their upkeep, so I
got them taken off before they were done doing their job.
38. When did you get your period or hit puberty?
Age 10.
39. Both sexes: when did you start shaving?
In high school. 12 or 13 years old, I guess.
40. Girls: when did you start wearing a bra?
I have no idea, but I stopped in college (age 15) and never started again.
41. What was your first kiss like?
I was too uncomfortable to take notes.
42. What did you do on your first date?
Im not sure what to count as my first date. There was this guy I hung
out with a lot from the age of 16 to 18 or so, and people assumed we were
going out, but we never kissed or held hands, even. Our first date was
breakfast at the donut shop. The next thing I would call any kind of date
was with my first boyfriend. We were already having sex before our first
date, which was at a comedy club.
43. How old were you when you first drank?
Young, maybe ten, but I hated it.
44. Where was your first house?
When I was born, we lived in a house in Connecticut. Then we moved a LOT
over the next 12 years.
45. What kind of lunch box did you bring to school? No idea. Probably
Partridge Family or something.
46. What were you scared of when you were little? The dark, vampires,
anything I saw in a scary movie, my aunt, my mother, my own fucking
shadow. I was a scared little girl.
47. When and what was your first bad word? No idea.
48. What was your favorite outfit when you were a kid? I dont know, but I
was wearing the same orange dress in my fourth- and fifth-grade school
photos.
49. What was your nickname as a kid? Sandi.
50. Which of these things embarrass you the most? Im not embarrassed by
any of it.
