First I cancelled the two-job days.

Then I cancelled the second job.

Now I'm moving on to the new schedule that includes a part-time job and
some contract work, and my temptation is to say to myself, "Cool! Now I
can do lots and lots of stuff every day!" and start scheduling the shit
out of my days off from work.

Not gonna happen.

New rule: No Double-booking. One thing a day is enough. Work OR social
stuff OR errands. Not all three.

I have spoken.

You can't mix errands and social time i.e. sharing kitchen gadget porn time with a friend while actually shopping for a needed item. Just asking . . .

Silly woman. Time with family is downtime. Same-same. :-)

Sounds very wise. I find that my free time usually tends to fill up way too fast once I start thinking about all the cool stuff I can do with it. Self-discipline is good. :-)

I wish a rule like that would work for me.

Not likely that we would forget about each other, cutie. Hope you're well.

I do, too. My experience is that I need a TON of downtime, and when I schedule it, my life is happier.

Being family, you're on my "When I win the lottery....!" list.

Part of the reason I'm still working where I've worked for 20+ years is because I like social stuff with most of my coworkers. As one of them once said, "It's a trap. You come here and you like these people, and you can never leave! It sucks you in!" It's not that much of an exaggeration.
It has it's ups and downs, but I've been kind of lucky.

Now, however I am ready to retire. Working just interferes with my reading. Even before the internet working has been an obstacle to keep me from my reading. It just gets more and more annoying.

Forget scheduling. I've never understood how you organized people (which I definitely am not) do it anyway. I have enough trouble paying attention to Dr.s' appts. I've put in my PDA.

Good Luck with it all. Schedule some days with us! Couldn't you run a few errands in the neighborhood where you've scheduled dinner with us? If it's too much, I'll read at the table and you can ignore me, which should cut your socializing energy expenditure down by 1/3 (I'm only 1/2 -1/3 kidding. I am a true introvert afterall).

I actually enjoy mundane tasks like grocery shopping with my close friends. and it often feels like down time that is social as well, and gets the groceries into the house to boot.

When I quit my day job, my motto became "Do Less." I told a wise pig that I had decided to do only 3 things a day, instead of my previous 20. The wise pig said, "Three? That's a lot!" It was bacon (or perhaps ham) for thought.
