stonebender got me a gift certificate for Rasputin for Giftmas, and we gave Munchkin The Younger money for zir birthday, so we all three went to spend our dough. I headed straight for the used CDs and came away with a haul. Wanna see?
(I have been slowly replacing beloved CDs that I've given up, lost, or sold over the years. The only new thing in here is the Counting Crows.)
Listened to Traffic From Paradise today (which was my guess for which appeared in your contest, but I didn't go check), and it got me all wistful about cute-poet-chick, and then it got me feeling really sorry that I spent so long with someone I had to work so very hard to please. It was cathartic. She (Rickie Lee) actually reminds me a lot of cute-poet-chick. Seeing her in concert, it's clear she is irritated at anything that doesn't go exactly as she wants it. (That is *not* a good gestalt description of cute-poet-chick, but the thing that was on my mind today. I spent a lot of years trying to make myself exactly what she wanted, and it was never gonna work.)
It was actually Fumbling Towards Ecstacy that was in the contest. I broke a rule on that one, including something with a clear picture of the artist on the cover, but it did give lots of people one to get who had been stymied otherwise.
I can relate to the personality traits that you mention. I've heard that said about many musicians, too. In particular, I've heard that Dead Can Dance are *very much* that way, and regularly pitch fits and walk offstage, needing to be assuaged before they'll come back on. I've seen them twice and they behaved perfectly the second time, but the first time Brendan did leave the stage at one point for a while in what looked to be anger.
I'm glad that it was a cathartic experience for you. I've been thinking of going with friends to see Ani DiFranco next time she comes to town. I don't like her that much as a to-listen-to-at-home artist, but she puts on a great live show. I've been avoiding her, though, because I strongly associate the experience of going to her shows with my first girlfriend, my relationship with whom ended poorly. I was thinking that maybe breaking some of those associations down might help.
I've heard that Ani is often surly in concert, but I still want to see her. (I know that she discourages people singing along and specifically on "Untouchable Face," but that one I get, because who wants an audience screaming back "Fuck You!" a hundred times?)
I've only seen her once and it was a long, long time ago: I'm guessing 1991 or 1992. I found her engaging and energetic, and very infectious in those aspects. She also really seemed to be a real person on the stage rather than a glitzy star. I liked those aspects a lot. She also had another musician with her, IIRC playing drums. It added something that I sometimes find lacking in the things I've heard where it's just her and a guitar.
