As I've said elswhere today, no one who knows [livejournal.com profile] annburlingham will be the least bit surprised that my visit with her and [livejournal.com profile] pipyn today netted me some good books. First, we had yummy sushi. Then we went to my regular bookstore, where I successfully resisted a book about food science, a half-price copy of Holidays on Ice on CD, and a copy of Naked for six bucks.

Then we went to Other Change of Hobbit and I was sunk. Got Coraline, the Tiptree anthology (loved seeing [livejournal.com profile] wild_irises's name on the cover), The Secret Country (ditto [livejournal.com profile] pameladean), and Tooth and Claw, by Jo Walton, who I like from Usenet and elsewhere but don't really know.

Next, [livejournal.com profile] annburlingham gave me an utterly delightful gift: The Barbary Coast, by Herbert Asbury, subtitled "An informal history of the San Francisco underworld". It has a picture of "A madame and some of her girls" on the frontispiece. Fun!

And to round out the day of bookshopping, [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy and I walked to Temescal, stopping at the bookstore too see if I could find a book they'd had earlier in the week. It was gone, but I got The Poet's Companion, Gilroy's Garlic Lover's Cookbook, and a Scarpetta mystery I haven't read yet.

Whew. I won't be buying books again any time soon.

Really good to spend time with good people. Good, bookloving people. Fun.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] porcinea, I almost bought a classic-winnie cookbook for you, but the first recipe I turned to had bacon in it and I just felt so sad for Piglet that I put it down. Silly, I know.

books!

Coraline is such a good book. I have several copies for my students to read in my classroom.

Dunno if you knew this, but Jo Walton is on LJ as [livejournal.com profile] papersky.

It must be book-buying day. I had a spree buying books online -- all for research, but it's still great fun.

May I borrow the Barbary Coast book sometime? Not soon -- between now and the end of summer, my reading is going to be focused on research. Which has great charms, but means that my leisure reading is limited.

I do know it, but it's my understanding she doesn't care to say so "out loud", as it were. I may be wrong.

And yes, of course you may borrow it, any time you like, for as long as you like.

And I've just gone and seen that she mentions her name on her userinfo page. Old soc.singles.moderated habit to keep her name and username separate.

I've heard great things about it, and I loved American Gods a really lot.

I've also read American Gods and never realized it was the same author. I enjoyed that book as well.

I don't think she cares if she mentions it

She talks about her books on her journal.

Oh, blast

Have you read The Fionavar Tapestries (http://www.brightweavings.com/books/fionavar.htm)?

They kick much hiney.

Wow, when were you on SSM? Because that's where I know Jo from.

I'm still there on and off. I find it hard to keep up with. Google says my last post was Feb. 8th, and before that, August of last year.

Ah, I left it in 2004 after the presidential election; I'd been posting there since summer 1996.

Yeah. '99-'01 was the busiest time there for me, and I do remember you from there. There's a lot of overlap among my friends with ssm, soc.bi, alt.poly, and WomBAT.
