For good or for bad, I'm involved in the following conversations that have nothing at all to do with the group's stated topic:

1) I'm on the liberal side (duh) of a liberalism vs. libertarianism discussion on alt.polyamory (I've just bowed out of discussing it with someone who's being patronizing and namecalling, but I may talk about it with others in the thread), and the atheist side of a discussion about the value of religion and the nature of morality

2) On rec.food.cooking, we're discussing killfiles, staying friends with exes, Freecycle and the utility of keeping/discarding material possessions

3) On alt.sex.stories.d, we're talking about acronyms and whether or not fat people should be denied surgery

4) On [livejournal.com profile] dot_poly_snark, it's consent as it applies to sex with animals

The internet is a strange, strange universe.

I can't figure out which side, if any, I'm putting forth on that one.

Possibly just "mine".

I was astounded that you lasted that long with zie.

I'm Randall, by the way. :)

The internet is definitely stranger than fiction.

I think I need to take the time to read some alt.poly again.

In the same thread?

In the same thread?

As it happens, yes. (Someone wrote a sentence with BMI, BBC, FDA, and UK in the same sentence, and it made someone's brain implode.)

Alt.poly's been a really good discussion ground lately, even disregarding the current libertarian-and-really-abrasive newbie.

I kind of bowed out of the entire libertarianism discussion from the get-go.

Hey, Randall.

In a less busy/stressful week, I think I would've had the energy for more of the discussion, but when people start namecalling, they give me a good out if I want it.

Yeah, I think I agree with you. (Funnily, that's usually how my "side" feels to me, too, but in this case I mean that I don't see you doing anything but correcting people who are misspeaking and misrepresenting what you (and others) believe.)

I'm used to having the fact that I'm a polytheist or an extremely hard agnostic throwing that sort of conversation for a loop, but as far as I can tell the current glitch is mostly that I appear to be the one speaking English.

This is a strange, strange perspective.

of those, i caught the pony discussion, but i wonder what possible argument there could be for denying fat people surgery--we don't want to save the lives of fat people?

gah.

Fat people are a bigger surgery risk (the person couldn't provide a single cite for that -- he did provide a cite for the fact that doctors are *denying* fat people surgery on the *assumption* that they're a bigger risk, and that it was financial in nature (the decision was, that is) -- but even in that article, experts were saying that it is unconscionable to allow fat people to suffer in order to save a buck.

Oh, and in the article he cited, which I thought was classic, if you read farther down, you'd see that when they expanded the cutoff from BMI 30 to BMI 34, there was ZERO change in the percentage of successful surgery outcomes.

Fat-phobic fuckers.

You might want to have a look at this recent post of mine (http://vinnie-tesla.livejournal.com/34359.html), and, hell, the couple posts before it.
