"...How dull it is to pause, to make an end, To rust unburnished, not to shine in use! As though to breath were life. Life piled on life Were all too little, and of one to me Little remains: but every hour is saved From that eternal silence, something more, A bringer of new things; and vile it were For some three suns to store and hoard myself, And this grey spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought..."
(Which is just to say....don't lie fallow too long. Besides which, I miss ya.)
I love thinking of what I'm doing that way: I'm a fertile field, but taking a rest between crops.
Other people refer to it as recharging the creative well; although I have a lot of water in my thinking, the metaphor of creativity as water that passes through me from another source and then exits doesn't work for me as well as raising a crop does.
Of course, the idea of all these artists lying fallow between creations gives me yet another idea for a piece that I don't currently have the energy to execute ... somebody plant me with legumes, quick!
