Today, I do not feel like dealing with my life. This is partly social overload, partly having a pile of work staring me in the face, and partly the gang of fucking ants who have decided to take over my kitchen.

Fortunately, working for myself means I don't have to deal with my life today if I don't want to. I'm gonna make pancakes, goof off on the internet, and wait for the inevitable desire to go clean my house and eradicate the fucking ants. Killing things doesn't make me feel better, but cleaning things always does.

Arrrrrgh, ants in the kitchen. :(

We had ants in the office the other day. Fortunately, they were disorganized and hadn't located any sources of food, so just dusting to remove the ants themselves and any loose crumbs that might encourage them was sufficient. (Seems to have been sufficient. They might come back; I'm not sure where they were coming from. I hope not the giant pile of garbage on the neighbor's porch. I hope the pile goes away soon. If it's not gone this weekend I will offer to help carry.)

The last time we had ants in the kitchen I went down there with my spray bottle of Cleansing Substance two or three times a day and destroyed them all manually, along with their pesky pheromone trails. Kinda time-consuming, but obscurely satisfying somehow.

Yep, that's the plan. I am already spraying them whenever I see one move, and that's very satisfying, even though I really really really wish I could get them out without killing them. I don't like killing things, but I like making them gone. Y'know?

If you have the patience, you COULD get the ants out of there without killing them. Check out this link and read the chapter called "The Amateur Scientist" about Richard Feynman's experiment with ants, including how he got them completely out of his jelly jars without killing a single one.

You could consider a non-lethal response your World Animal Day observance.

or not....

heh. when i was in college, i lived in an apartment with two friends of mine for a while. because one of them was slightly odd, we named all of the rooms to our apartment. the kitchen was named "Oh, *ants*." in a slightly sad disappointed tone. ask me to say it the next time you see me and i will.

Oh yeah, I know that one.

In many ways, it makes more sense to think of the colony as the proper ant organism, with individual ant bodies just parts of it. Then you can think of it as just slapping the colony on the wrist when it reaches into your territory.
