Today, I got lovely surprises in the mail.

1) Holiday cards with [livejournal.com profile] joedecker's photographic art on them. Squeeeee! (Took longer than expected because my upstairs neighbors only check their mail once a week, and they had it.)

2) Kaffir lime leaves, kaffir lime seeds, and Thai chili seeds from a net.pal who grows these things on his large property in Thailand, where he lives half the year. Yay! (For the non-foodies out there, kaffir lime leaves are expensive and basically essential for many of my favorite Thai dishes, but my net.pal thinks they'll grow in the shade of my apple tree on my garden plot.

Mail is fun!

I'm not the world's greatest gardener, but I've managed to keep my dwarf Key lime alive, so I *might* try a Kaffir.

oh, awesome! i know of no place in town i can buy kaffir lime leaves, and i don't really think they'll grow here. i occasionally go to the city and buy some at the huge asian market, but that involves getting a ride up there. if i can't get someplace on my bike, chances are i'm not going to go. so i make my favorites (mmmm, evil jungle tofu...just not the same without them!) once or twice a year.

Kaffir limes grow here - one of the regulars in our houston.eats grows them:

You might try pinging him for tips, although it's not exactly the same climate. :)

Want me to take you some seeds on the 1st?

Yes, please! I was just talking with Tim about skills we all should have. Growing a tree from seed would be a challenge for me, but I can't fail unless I try, right? :)

Exactly! I'm gonna stick some in some soil inside to germinate, I think. Want bare seeds or a cup of seedling, or both?

No, because I'm the world's greatest non-gardener. However, if yours grows, I may presume on you now and again for a leaf ...

Of course. I'll bring some over tonight, too, if you like. They freeze well.

The local indian grocery in the next town closed and the one three towns away as well :-( I'm afraid New England weathers would not be conducive to lime growth.
