I could make a full-time job on the low-fat-vegan boards I have started to frequent of reminding people that fat doesn't equal not-healthy, and that it's possible to work on improving health at any size. It's been two days since I joined, and it's already been (not gently) suggested by one of the members that I don't belong there if I don't agree that [livejournal.com profile] isachandra is not a good spokesperson for veganism because she's some gross fat blob (I'm paraphrasing, but not by much). Fuck that. I made a new usericon for the boards (same as the icon for this post), and I don't plan on making myself any LESS annoying in the near future. I wouldn't say I'm enjoying it (I do have feelings, after all), but I'm glad I'm there, because some people don't even notice they're being bigots if no one points it out.

Wow, that's fucking ridiculous. Sometimes vegans really can be their own worst enemies. I am embarrassed by much of the vegan community much of the time.

Of course, there are annoying people in all walks of life.

Keep up the good work. You'll get through to the people who need to hear what you're saying.

because some people don't even notice they're being bigots if no one points it out.

Even then.... You know that some people just won't GET IT.

It's on Dr. McDougall's website:

http://drmcdougall.com/forums/index.php

More fat-friendly company can be found at these two groups I've been on for ages. They even forbid threads from becoming about dieting:

My impression of McDougallism is that it's a weight-loss-through-veganism thing. Kind of the inverse of the Atkins diet. I suspect they're likely to consider you a troll for challenging their socially approved bigotry. :(

I've been reading McDougall's books and hanging out with the folks on the two bottom lists (and other McDougallers) for decades, and he really is about health at every size, though he (like most doctors) does think weight loss is a good idea.

If I didn't know the two lists on the bottom existed, I might think all McDougall folks are like this, but I know better.

Well, messing with their groupthink is a good thing. But no one's going to pay you for it & it's not your job, so make sure you only do it as long as it doesn't start to hurt you personally. Take care of yourself, darlin'.

Sanks, hunny.

Speaking of non sequiturs, is it wrong that I just feel like petting the roar-y lion?

ah, she walks full on into the belly of the beast! (sorry, that's a fairly fleshy comment, isn't it?!?!)

we need to have folks who can go forward into a number of fronts, and the good thing is that we are still shoulder-to-shoulder, tush to tush, to support each other as we move forward.

Hi -- I followed you over here from the McDougall board and just wanted to say how glad I was to see your message of health at any size. I'm a fellow fat vegan, struggling with eating issues for over 25 years, and I hope it's OK that I'm friending you.

I followed you here from there too and I must say it's refreshing over there to see some people saying that being fat does not equal being unhealthy!
