Things I learned to do in Linux today, after I finished venting my frustration on the longsuffering [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy:

* find files (even protected ones)
* delete protected files
* list files

Babysteps, yes, but wow, I feel so powerful.

(I have been longing to return to a command-line interface since I left DOS behind. It makes more sense to my linear, non-visual brain.)

oh, i know just what you mean about missing the commandline. i am currently doing massive audio filetype conversion and am so happy about being able to handle it all from the CL.

The Linux command-line interface is vastly better than DOS; you can actually write programs in it.

check out 'cheat' [http://cheat.errtheblog.com/] - it started off ruby-centric, but seems to have branched beyond that

No, that's cool!

There was some essay somewhere that had a few good points....

Haven't read it in a while...

I sort of straddle both sides on this (what a surprise!). I like GUIs and have a penchant for elegant GUIs. On the other hand, I also have a strong nostalgic attachment to character-based interfaces, and will periodically operate in just a totally full-screen Terminal window.
