There's a movie meme thingy going around, and I'm weary of bolded/italicized lists, but there were stories for two of the movies, so I'll post that instead.

ET: The Extraterrestrial: This is the only movie I ever remember going to with my family as a group. My mom and my two brothers and I stood in line for something like four hours. The theater had made an event of it. They'd even brought in this guy who was a locally famous mime and juggler to entertain the crowd, and they were passing out bottled water. I was around sixteen. I liked the movie, but didn't think it was as huge a deal as it was being made out to be. Still, it was An Event, and it was fun to have that memory to share with my siblings, who were 10 and 13 at the time.

Titanic: Never did see that. Didn't have any interest in seeing it in the theater, and then when my family rented it on video, they wanted me to come watch it with them. So I tore myself away from the computer, where I was nurturing a new love affair with TOTGA, and sat in the living room. I can still remember how fidgety and bored I was. I did not WANT to be watching a movie about love. I wanted to be down in the computer room talking about this new love experience I was having, with the person I was having it with. I think I lasted about 45 minutes. It was excruciating. I neglected my family a lot those nine months.

Honestly, I saw ET in the theatres when it first opened, as a child, and I hated it with a burning hate that that I was sure would continue to emanate as a dull red glow coming up through the dirt of my grave after I died. I'm not sure that I have quite as strong an opinion on it, but I never did grow to like it, or even not dislike it, after seeing it again later. I think it may have been one of the first media creations that I was very critical of.

I must have been an extremely cynical 13-year-old. I was sick of it by the end and thought it was schmaltzy rather than heart-warming. Damn, I must have been a tougher teenager than I thought.

Hah...so ironically Titanic killed your love instead of igniting it ;)

My younger son was quite into ET when he saw it -- he still uses "Elliot" as his name in connection with one online community.

I've had no desire to see Titanic because of the "see huge numbers of super-realistic dead bodies floating around!" buzz I was reading about it when it came out, not to mention finding all the hype a little much *period*.

I ended up finding out about an advanced screening just a block away from where I was attending a science fiction convention. I decided to go for it. I was actually reading the novelization while in line.

I came to the entrance just as ET was fading away. What an appropriate place to stop before seeing the movie!

I still haven't seen the expanded and sanitized (for your protection) version.
