Sreevay redux

I may spend the rest of the day alternating between doing a little housework and answering LJ surveys. You've been warned.
This one, which I ganked from
mamagotcha, has actual meaty content, though I suspect it was written by someone who's a little young and titillated by the ooh-scary-controversial! nature of asking about things like abortion.
[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
I don't know about "guts" –– it's more curiosity.
[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
Nope. I like my teeth and skin and hair, thank you.
[03] Abortion: for or against it?
It should be legal, safe, and affordable. That said, I'm personally opposed to it, and I've taken to heart the bumperstickers that say "Don't like abortion? Then don't have one." I haven't had an abortion, but I've used the morning-after pill, but at the time, I believed it was not an abortifacient. I don't believe that now, and would not take it again. Besides, it made me sick. When I was offered one after I was raped, I refused.
[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?
Apparently not.
[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
No. Raising ourselves above violence and revenge is what civilizes us.
[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Prohibition doesn't work. Never has. In this case, it's even more ridiculous because of the potential medical uses and the relative lack of both short-term and long-term damage (consider both with tobacco and alcohol).
[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
Well, that's assuming I'm for marriage. Leaving that aside, I think people should indulge in sex with the same conditions that I think they should have access to other things (driving, guns, drugs): with total access to information about potential consequences, prevention of undesired outcomes, and safe alternatives. If someone isn't able or willing to accept the potential consequences, and can't display adequate knowledge of all aspects and ramifications, they shouldn't indulge.
[08] Do you believe in God?
No, I really don't, and I'm annoyed that that is a fringe attitude. In my mind, people's aghast expressions should be aimed at the people who DO believe in invisible critters in the sky who care who I fuck (or who created the world yet allow babies to die of starvation; or who are in all things and yet are impossible to detect, but yeah, they're there, I just know it; or...)
[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
I don't actually think the government should have a hand in who marries whom, but yes, if I can marry a man, I should also be allowed to marry a woman or a person of some other gender.
[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
That assumes I believe it should be illegal to cross any border, and I don't. But if I did, then answer would be Of course not, and I think it's telling that the questioner seems to ignore that there's LOTS of illegal immigration by people who are NOT of Latin descent. As someone said to me once, no one's angry about immigration from Canada or Ireland -- it's the brown-skinned people we're scared of.
[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
If she wants to. Make sure Daddy comes through with those support payments, and give her access to a group home situation where she and her peers can cooperatively raise their kids in a supportive environment, if she doesn't have a loving home to begin with.
[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
It should be abolished. No matter what limit you give it, there will be those who are spurred on by the "forbidden fruit" aspect and go overboard. This goes for all substances, in my book. But I know that's in an ideal world, where people have access to caring parents, unbiased education and are responsible enough not to hurt others while under the influence.
[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Yes. It never should have been started.
[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
If, after being given all the palliative care and emotional support possible, a person (or the legal representative of that person) makes the decision that their quality of life has deteriorated beyond being bearable, they should be allowed to end their lives as peacefully and gently as possible. We give our beloved animal companions this dignity; why do we deny it to ourselves?
[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
No, but I've done it. I've never gotten over it. It was a huge trauma for me.
[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
Sure.
[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?
Obama, by a mile. I hear people talking about how he's inexperienced, but my answer is, "McCain is experienced, sure -- experienced at fucking things up, kissing Bush's ass, being corrupt, and calling his wife a cunt." If that's the kind of president people want, I despair for the world.
[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
I KNOW they will judge me, but I'm not afraid of it. That's why judgment exists. I'm not quite sure when judging became such a horrible thing... it's a valuable tool we use constantly. The trick is to use it sensibly. So, yes, please DO judge me. I'll be judging you from your answers, too. Judging people from their thoughtful and honest answers to difficult questions strikes me as a lot more intelligent than judging them by their clothing or skin color or choice of music, wouldn't you say?
