1. Is it so unreasonable to wish my whole family would be healthy at the same time? Poor [livejournal.com profile] dbubley. Poor [livejournal.com profile] loracs.

2. [livejournal.com profile] stonebender and [livejournal.com profile] wtfpotatoes are frighteningly like siblings when they're playing World of Warcraft.

3. Add "Dexter" to my short list of things for which the movie/show is better than the book(s). LOTS better. (The list also includes "Fried Green Tomatoes" and, though I've neither read nor seen it, "The Bridges of Madison County", because that seems to be the universal review.)

4. Now that my almost-migraine is almost gone, fun food survey from [livejournal.com profile] therealjae.

What's the last thing you ate?

A small piece of chicken.

What's your favorite cheese?

The creamier the better. Brie, cambazola, melted swiss, stuff like that.

What's your favorite fish?

Shrimp, hands down.

What's your favorite fruit?

Good garden tomatoes. Avocados. Good watermelon (which is getting harder to find). Ripe melon of any kind. Mango. Sweet white peaches.

When, if ever, did you start liking olives?

I don't remember ever liking black (ripe) olives, or ever disliking green or kalamata olives.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer?

Yuck yuck yuck.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish?

I don't remember ever disliking it.

What was the best thing your parent/s used to make?

My mom makes a killer knaedlach (matzoh ball) soup.

What's the native specialty of your home town?

FSVO "home town", my brother and I were just talking about how the only "native specialty" of San Diego is fish tacos.

What's your comfort food?

Creamy foods. Soup. Mom's cooking. Grilled cheese sandwich made with American cheese and dipped in Campbell's tomato soup. Thai food.

What's your favorite type of chocolate?

I don't care about chocolate one way or the other, but I do prefer milk to dark.

How do you like your steak?

I can take steak or leave it. I don't love it, but no matter what doneness it is, I don't hate it, either.

How do you like your burger?

Preferably cooked over a flame. On a bun with mayo and tomatoes. Optionally, onions, lettuce, pickles. NO ketchup. NO cheese.

How do you like your eggs?

Either over easy, scrambled, in tortilla/frittata, in quiche, or in egg salad.

How do you like your potatoes?

Any way but mashed.

How do you take your coffee?

Very sweet and light. I mostly only drink it if I need the caffeine.

How do you take your tea?

I hate herbal tea or tea with flowers in it, like Earl Grey. I prefer black or black/peppermint with lots of sugar, or black tea with sugar and milk.

What's your favorite mug?

I don't have one. I grab whatever's handy.

What's your cookie of choice?

I don't really care about cookies one way or the other (hmm, I sense a theme), but I do like ones that are crisp and buttery, like the ones at Bakesale Betty.

What's your ideal breakfast?

Leftover Thai food. :-)

What's your ideal sandwich?

Tomato and mayo on soft wheat bread. Optionally, sprouts and/or avocado.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)?

I like it with lots of stuff on it, like sausage and onions and peppers and salami and stuff, but the main thing is onions. I don't even see the point of pizza without onions. (But I don't like pizza that much, and could happily live without it.)

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)?

Berry pie is probably my favorite, followed by pot pie with lots of gravy in it.

What's your ideal salad?

Salad is god. I have rarely met a salad I didn't like.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge?

Cottage cheese for [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy. Fifty gazillion condiments. Everything else is optional.

What food do you always like to have in the freezer?

Coffee for [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy. Frozen potstickers or other easy snack foods.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard?

Pasta, beans, tomato products, corn, tuna, potatoes, bread flour...

What spices can you not live without?

Garlic.

What sauces can you not live without?

I refuse to give up any sauce at all. So there.

Where do you buy most of your food?

The Berkeley Bowl.

How often do you go food shopping?

Several times a week, on average.

What's the most you've spent on a single food item?

Hmmm. Dunno. I'll think it over.

What's the most expensive piece of kitchen equipment you own?

The mixer that [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy and [livejournal.com profile] loracs gave me as a housewarming present. (Unless you count the fridge and stove.)

What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen?

The electric teakettle we got at Costco yesterday.

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without?

A good knife.

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients?

Almost every day.

What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients?

I made a pot of chicken noodle soup for [livejournal.com profile] loracs, 'cause she's sick.

What's your favorite thing to make for yourself?

Hmmm. I guess potstickers. I really love the things.

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig, chicken and turkey?

Lamb, duck, goose, rabbit, snake, ostrich, horse, frogs' legs...I think that's it.

What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor?

Ewwwwwwwww.

What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild?

I don't remember. Maybe a plum off the tree that grows on our street.

Place the following cuisines in order of preference (greatest to least):

Thai, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, French, Indian (but I love them ALL!).

Place the following boozes in order of preference (greatest to least):

Eww, no thanks. But here they are if you want them for yourself: whiskey, rum, brandy, vodka, tequila

garlic, basil, ginger, lime, aniseed

Don't hate me, but I love love love KFC's cole slaw.

My friend A's wedding dinner (I had poached salmon with a hollandaise sauce with caviar stirred into it). The service was amazing. I can't think of another experience that comes close.

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day?

Eh. Water.

For reading, Laurel's Kitchen. For cooking from, anything by Madhur Jaffrey.

So many. I may make a separate post about that.

What's the next thing you'll eat?

Maybe some of the chicken soup. It's pretty good.

I was appalled at how bad the Dexter books are. I mean, the first one? Ok. But the second or third with the absolutely crazy plot (demons!!!, possession, bad writing!)? Indefensible.
