"Suspicious for papillary carcinoma."
I meet with the endocrinologist today and get an appointment with the surgeon. I need to do some research about radioactive iodine treatment. I didn't take it last time, but she wants me to do it this time. Have I mentioned I'm sick of doctors?
I'm doing okay, considering. Still wouldn't mind some pats on the head and "there, there"s.
Thanks to
kalmn for reminding me to mention this (not that she nagged me or anything, just that she mentioned it and it reminded me that I should say it here): Just about no one dies of thyroid cancer. I'm not afraid for my life, just tired of doctors and hospitals and surgeries and stuff. Lots of people, including people in my family, have it worse than I do.

Date: 2009-01-06 08:43 pm (UTC)Good luck, Serene, whatever you decide. I have an acquaintance who went through radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer and came out the other side in good health.

Date: 2009-01-06 08:47 pm (UTC)b) In contrast to other cancers, thyroid cancer is almost always curable. Most thyroid cancers grow slowly and are associated with a very favorable prognosis. The mean survival rate after 10 years is higher than 90% and is 100% in very young patients with minimal nonmetastatic disease. yaaay!

OK, I know it's scary stuff, but (as you say) it's treatable stuff. Just a whole lot of PITA.

Date: 2009-01-06 09:51 pm (UTC)I had a substitute teacher once who told us the only really bad thing about taking the radioactive iodine was that she wasn't supposed to snuggle her brand-new grandchild for a while.

I am available, with some planning, to go with you on any parts of this journey.

Date: 2009-01-06 10:15 pm (UTC)Six people in my unit at the hospital in the last 6 years have been diagnosed with various forms of thyroid cancers and disorders. Makes us all fear the water or air or....something. Anyway, all are perfectly fine post-treatment, no cancer left at all. Radioactive iodine is not a biggee according to them, just no exchange of body fluids with lovers for a few weeks following treatment. Yes, I'm really serious.
Stay strong, this too shall pass.
