1) The Best Job Ever really is the best.

2) I've made an executive decision to go see the doctor I was scheduled
with, rather than waiting to see the one my endo prefers. I did a little
web research, and other than age and national origin, I can't see any
substantive difference between them. They even both went to school in
Pennsylvania. I'll just see how it goes. (It's possible that Dr. H. is
just covering for Dr. G., in which case I would've felt silly raising a
stink anyway. Okay, part of this is because I got tired of waiting on hold
to change the appointment, but still, sooner is better in a lot of ways.)

3) Google Scholar rocks.

4) [livejournal.com profile] wtfpotatoes wants a pet, and we can't have dogs or cats here,
so we're getting piggies! (Guinea pigs, that is.) They do better and live
longer in pairs, so we're getting two. One tomorrow or the next day from a
lovely guinea-pig-fostering woman who reminds me of Kimberly, and then
another from her pusher friend who owns a small-critter supply
store and rescues the animals. I posted to Freecycle to get a cage, and
this woman came forward and offered a folding cage, a sweet guinea pig,
and tons of useful advice. Yay!

You do realize that, depending on just what your "pair" of guinea pigs consists of, you may end up with lots more than two.

Nonono, they actually do better in same-sex pairings, according to this woman, and I definitely don't want to become a breeder, in any sense of the word. :-)

Guinea pigs are not known for their intelligence. At least in our household -- of the ~55 people who live here who aren't humans the gps are the only two who have never told us their names because they can't remember them. They can talk but don't say much unlike some of our people who love to talk, especially late at night.

My parents had guinea pigs for years and used to devise mazes and other intelligence tests for them - they're smarter than people think. I would say that - it took until I was 18 months for them to believe I was smarter than the guinea pig...

Lovely clean animals. Very fond of kale and melon.

Ah, but the reason the ones in our household are of below average intelligence is that they are (physically) very narrow and thus don't have a whole lot of room for brains.

Breeding guinea pigs is not for the faint of heart. While the babies are the absolutely cutest things ever, because they are born fully furred, with eyes open, able to eat solid food--in other words, they are adorable little miniatures of the adults--maternal mortality rates are very high. So, yeah, a same-sex pair is a better idea.

that's definitely true
did she discuss diet w/ you? piggies need extra vitamin C, so you'll need to get them supplements

Sadly, James is allergic to both cats and rabbits. Did I misunderstand him, or are allergies to the two related?

Date: 2009-01-10 03:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] baerana.livejournal.com
um, they shouldn't be related. most people who are allergic to cats are allergic to the dander, and rabbits don't have dander. rabbit allergies are very unusual.

My favorite story in that vein, if one can be said to have a favorite bunny-allergy story, is that the woman who was our (my sister's and my) algebra teacher is very allergic to rabbits, and she was pregnant, and suddenly suffering symptoms out of nowhere. Turns out my sister had smuggled her pet rabbit into school. That teacher is now my mom's close friend, and she loves to use that as an example of how impossible my sister was, but I actually think it was one of the rare cute things she did.

My niece has two of them they are delightful. The eldest Taz will make squealing noises when he hears the refrigerator door open when he is hungry. When you hold him and stroke just the right spot he makes this cute bubbly noise. I'm just glad I don't have to clean up their cages. Good Luck!

Make sure they have a big enough cage, and make sure they're clean enough. I've had guinea pigs my whole early life, and I loved them. They are sweet. Take good care of them!
