(12:23:48 PM) ailbhel: *who* is the singer who was underprepared?
(12:24:37 PM) Serene: the army sergeant who sang the national anthem at the beginning.
(12:24:46 PM) ailbhel: Coo
(12:25:23 PM) Serene: he came in a line late, then came in too soon on the last word by several beats, but he caught himself. so he said "and the home of the br--- brave."
(12:25:44 PM) ailbhel: Heh
(12:25:55 PM) ailbhel: Poor guy
(12:26:12 PM) ailbhel: I imagine the stage-fright must be fairly serious
(12:26:23 PM) Serene: yep. but I heard someone tell him as he went offstage, "Thank you, Sergeant, you did great."
(12:26:33 PM) ailbhel: Aww :)
(12:26:38 PM) ailbhel: I love EVERYTHING about these people
(12:26:42 PM) Serene: I know. :-)

I dunno, I think that the arrangement was non-standard. I don't remember there being that much of a rest between the and brave normally.

Sure, but one assumes he practiced the version they were going to use before getting on stage before a billion people.

Absolutely, but with a repertoire standard like that, the usual version can take over sometimes. It's like trying to run an errand after work and finding yourself on the way home when you meant to turn the other way.

Oh, sure. My point in posting this particular snipped of conversation with [livejournal.com profile] ailbhe was just how sweet people were to him about it. I found it touching.
