Holy Wah. Criminal. Both of my grandchildrens' mothers agonized over the choice of vaccinating or not -- they both decided for it, but they agonized.

Shit head.

He should be charged in the deaths of those children. It's enfuriating.

(By the by, in my commune days, I bought the anti-vaccination line, and still really sympathize with parents who are scared to vaccinate.)

I understand the fears, particularly with all the hype around some (like this one) -- you want your kid to be ok, but you don't want to hurt it either.... i will do more research, but most of the vaccines will be given to my kid. However, chicken pox vaccine... no (unless i have a child with super low immune system problems... then i'll think about it). It's not fun, but generally it won't kill you or even be TERRIBLE to get chicken pox.

people want an excuse. they want a reason and they will cling to it. Jenny McCarthy (and therefor Jim Carrey) say the vaccination gave her son autism and he healed from it from a gluten free diet (among other things).... These are *known* people, being celebrities, and they speak as if they know what they are talking about, so others take their word for it...

Scary.

On the other hand, having chicken pox predisposes you to developing shingles later, and everyone I know who's had shingles has been in miserable pain for weeks. (I don't know if the vaccine protects against that, though.)

There's now a shingles vaccine, recommended for people over sixty.

It's pretty new. My mom's insurance company told her to go get it, and then she had to fight with her doctor about it. I was relieved to hear such a thing existed, though, since I did have chicken pox as a child (uck!) and really did not want shingles.

They have posters up about it at Kaiser, as well.

And on the third hand, getting chicken pox as an adult can be quite serious. My brother was hospitalised with it at the age of 26.

Huh. The ST and Daily Mail are among the papers I'd like to see charged with corporate manslaughter for their exaggeration and scaremongering about vaccines. Wakefield's dodgy reserch never would have done nearly so much harm without the media hysteria.

I had the MMR last week, to protect the [livejournal.com profile] quatlet from the local measles epidemic until he's old enough for it.

I don't have time to click the link, but I was always skeptical about that.
