Trimming the friends list. Caught up at work. Happy as usual (thank heavens that funk lifted). Excellent lasagne for lunch. All the bills are paid, even if that means I have about twenty dollars to last me the next week and a half. Found out there's a change machine at work, so I can get laundry quarters before I go home. Getting my own domain. Guys at work seem to like me and I like them. Ah, life.

My logic was that with fewer people's journals on my list every day (though I still can read them from my "friend of" area) I would get more writing done while I'm at work. We'll see if it works. I adore nearly every one of the people I deleted, and I'll probably get withdrawal and add everyone again, but I'm *trying* to be a conscientious writer. Not that they're not my friends any more, but I've pared the list down to people I keep in pretty close touch with.

So this brings up an etiquette question: Should one write to people when taking them off the list? Or should one just never take anyone off? Or...?

serene, who likes Usenet better for this very reason

hmmm. i guess if one doesn't write friends-only entries then it doesn't matter particularly. if one does, then (since one can filter one's "friends view" page to only show those friends whose journal one wants to read) people who get removed feel like the person removing them doesn't trust them or whatever. or, at least, that's how i feel ;-)

hmmm. i'd feel so bad about taking someone off my friends list that i've ended up in the unenviable situation of no longer feeling comfortable writing in my own journal. which is hardly an ideal state of affairs.

Oh, I see. No, I never ever write friends-only entries, and had no intention of making anyone feel untrustworthy. I've been using the "friends list" (I think it's a misnomer) as a convenience so all the people's journals I was reading would be on one page. Certainly I don't trust the 20 or so people I un-listed any less today than I did yesterday. (Translation: I still like you. :-)

Hey, do you know about making custom friends lists? That way, if you want to, you can have a "these are the people I read every day" list, and "these are my friends in general" list, etc.

Actually, I found out only last week, because another LJer told me. It's accessible through the ... next to "Friends" on your menu.
