Got hot and sweaty doing it, but giving out burritos went well. [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy was sweet enough to come with me on the walk.

Just geeking about the money and nutritional breakdowns. Almost certainly not of interest to anyone but me and [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy, who is simply *scandalized* by how much the cheese cost us. :-)

Per serving:

beans, $.06
rice, $.02
tomatoes, $.02
cheese, $.30
juice boxes, $.27
tortillas, $.17
foil sheets, $.02
napkins, $.01

Total: 85 cents per serving (factoring in that we gave out more juiceboxes than burritos, and not counting the small amounts of oil, salt, and spices that I used but didn't know how much I'd spent on)

This is just an estimate of the nutritional breakdown (counting one burrito and one juice box as a serving). Mainly, I need to add veggies/vitamins next time and might want to cut the fat and sodium. (There would have been more veggies this time, but I was pressed for time and didn't go for a produce run as I had planned.)

Sodium: 736 mg

Lowering the sodium would do no harm. But you're fine on fat content--that's 189 calories from fat. Just under 25 percent of the calories from fat is fine for most people/purposes.

A suggestion, worth what you paid for it - consider bottled water instead of juiceboxes next time, as the bottles can be re-used. (Scott always kept a flat of water bottles in his truck, as the #1 thing he encountered while working with the homeless was that they didn't have a way to keep drinks with them.)

Of course, you rock for doing this at all. :D

I send that. When I was homeless, I LOVED my bottled water when I could get it, and I would re-use the containers for a week, filling them up with better tasting water where I could get it.

What's really scary is that you just showed off Chipotles market magic... and they don't give away juice boxes!

(What's *really* scary to think about is that Chipotles can brag about spending more money on their food than most other restaurants... which means their meat is either really expensive, their seasonings are really expensive, or you should be really concerned about how cheap the food is in those most other restaurants.)

what was the experience like to hand out the food? how was it received? how did you feel about it?

did you factor in your time for the cost of each serving? or at least, can you break down how much time you spent purchasing, preparing and cleaning up.

I agree about the juice vs. water, and it can be purchased for about 15 cents per bottle at Costco (makes you really appreciate those $2 bottles sold at some venues). and one gets better hydration from the water, as the sugar in the juice can actually make you thirsty.

It wasn't a new experience for me, so it was pretty much as I expected. It was harder physically, but the people in our neighborhood who need food/money are uniformly grateful when we help them, and they're always sweet to us when we can't.

I didn't, nor am I likely to do so on a regular basis, but I'd say I shopped for about an hour, made food from 8:30-11:30am on the day of (with breaks), then packed up and left for the park around noon. We got back around 2. So I guess it was six or seven hours of work, but the shopping will be much less next time, for sure.

Yeah. If we do water, though, I might put something else sweet in the lunches, because, well, joy is important, and something sweet often brings joy. Maybe a piece of candy or a homemade cookie or something.
