Last burrito post for the day
Mar. 9th, 2008 03:38 pmGot hot and sweaty doing it, but giving out burritos went well.
someotherguy was sweet enough to come with me on the walk.
Just geeking about the money and nutritional breakdowns. Almost certainly not of interest to anyone but me and
someotherguy, who is simply *scandalized* by how much the cheese cost us. :-)

Mar. 9th, 2008 11:36 amI made 34 burritos. Shared one with
someotherguy, and we're heading out in a few minutes to give them away, along with the juiceboxes.
Lessons I learned today:
[EDIT: Oh, and if you're gonna show up to help us hand out burritos, call or text my work cellphone (you can send a text from my LJ profile if you don't have the number); we'll likely be walking north on Shattuck, starting at Bushrod Park.]

Lessons I learned today:
- Make more beans than you think you'll need (I stopped at 34 because I was out of beans)
- Make *way* less rice than you think you'll need (I think I ended up using about half the rice)
- Even a boring beans-and-rice burrito is improved by not skimping on the cheese
- Just because a pot has handles, that doesn't mean the handles are cool enough to actually touch (minor burns; a few blisters; I'll live)

( The finances on it so far )
I'm in a really good mood right now. I had a *wonderful* few days at
stonebender's, and now I'm having a really good day in my own home. Life is good.

Time: Prep begins at 8am; Lunch is served at noon
Where: Prep is at my house in North Oakland; Lunch is at the park across the street -- email serene@serenepages.org for directions
If you want to help, you can either come and cook/serve with us, or you can donate stuff we need:
beans
rice
canned tomatoes
spices (garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt)
onions
cheese (any kind)
hot cups with lids (for soup)
bottled water
juice boxes
fruits or vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)
money (paypal link below): your money will ONLY be used to help feed my neighbors. I will not take a cut or use the money for utensils, etc. Only food. You can't get a tax deduction for this, but I will keep the finances of this transparent -- I'll post what I spend/receive, and keep receipts.

Jan. 8th, 2008 11:47 am( Musing on feeding my neighborhood's homeless population --
this is long, so don't feel bad if you skip it. )
If you feel like giving me input and pointing out flaws in my plan, please
do. I'm aware that some municipalities are cracking down on feeding the
homeless, and I don't care about that.
