So there was a reason for the flies. Problem solved. I like fieldmice when they're alive, I really do.

I'm still gonna compulsively clean my kitchen for a while, though.

There was a fly problem in my living room once ... it turned out that a paper-bag-wrapped sandwich had been set on a shelf a while beforehand, and you can guess what it was full of when I found it. :-(
