21 questions about DW
May. 11th, 2011 10:28 pmHere's that 21-questions-about-Dreamwidth meme thingy for
three_weeks_for_dw . I am not posting enough to do a thing a day, but I like most of the questions, and I like Dreamwidth, so here goes.
1. Why did you sign up for Dreamwidth?
Because LJ was being awful in ways that struck a slacktivist gong in me. I think it was around the time this happened that I decided to just bail.
2. Why did you choose your journal name?
It's my name. I couldn't get it on LJ when I first got my account there in 2001, so I was excited it was available on DW, though if I'd thought it through, I might've just stuck with the same name both places.
3. Do you crosspost? Why or why not?
I don't, for much the same reason I'm not at LJ any more, except to read and, occasionally, to put out a time-sensitive post that I want wide distribution on.
4. What do you do online when you're not on DW?
Gosh. Email, work on school stuff (In September, I'll start my last year of undergraduate studies and take the GRE), usenet, IM with my partners, work on my cooking blog, and just this year I got involved in reddit and stumbleupon and twitter because of the food blog, so for the first time in my life, I'm spending time surfing the web as a thing. In the past, I didn't do much of that at all. Now I read a LOT of food blogs. And play Words With Friends.
5. How about when you're not on the computer?
I work at a part-time job I love. I take walks with my partners. I read a little. I play some (not-online) computer games.
6. What do you wish people who read your journal knew about you?
I don't tend to think in ways like wishing about what other people will think/know.
7. What is your favorite community on Dreamwidth?
The only comm I follow with any regularity is
plan_survive
8. What community do you wish was more active?
I can't answer the question, but it makes me want you all to recommend communities to me.
9. Are there two people on your reading list that you think should meet?
I honestly don't know which of my friends have met already, much less have opinions on whether they should do so, but hmm, I think
ailbhe and
ljgeoff would probably really like each other.
10. Tell me about your default icon.
lcohen took it at alt.polycon in 2005. Lots of people seem to think I look frustrated or upset in it, but I was fascinated, rapt, and I've named the file "ooh".
11. What features do you think Dreamwidth should have that it doesn't currently?
Photo storage. Phone posts. Text posts.
12. What do you consider the five most "telling" interests from the list on your profile? Why?
Well, my only unique one is "folk-rock singer-songwriters" and I only have 10 interests listed. I should do something about that. I maxed out on my list when I was at LJ.
13. Do you have any unique interests on your user profile? What are they? How'd they get there?
See #12. Pretty self-explanatory.
14. Did you have a gateway fandom? Still in it? Why or why not? Is there a community for it on DW?
I don't have a fandom, which I guess puts me in the minority at DW.
15. What's your current obsession? What about it captures your imagination?
I'M GOING BACK TO COLLEGE!
16. What are you glad you did but haven't really had a chance to post about?
I haven't talked much about the therapy I did after I was nearly murdered. I haven't talked much about my trip to Tokyo in 2006. I don't talk much about my struggles raising my sister's child, and probably won't do that much until after she's moved out on her own.
17. How many people on your reading list do you know IRL?
I object to the shorthand of "IRL (in real life)" for face-to-face. My relationships with people I haven't met in person yet are part of my real life. That said, I have 114 subscriptions on DW (a few are duplicates or my own accounts), and I estimate I know 51 in person. I say "estimate" because I'm bad at matching usernames to real names.
18. What don't you talk about here, either because it's too personal or because you don't have the energy?
Current relationship problems. Other people's private stuff. The details of my sex life.
19. Any questions from the audience?
20. Yes, but what are your thoughts on yaoi?
The couple pieces of it I've seen seemed sweet. It's not anything I've sought out, but if anyone wants to recommend especially good instances of it, I'd be happy to read it.
21. What's your favorite thing about Dreamwidth?
The feeling I get that the people in charge care about doing the right thing.
