Reading

On the 1st, I decided to take [personal profile] wild_irises's lead and start keeping track of what I read. Mom's been sick (more about that later), so you're getting the first half of January all here.

Finished:

Roxane Gay, An Untamed State. Gripping, often beautiful, often brutal. Many, many explicit descriptions of rape and torture. A tough read for me, but worth it, and I do keep thinking about it.

Margaret Yardley Potter, At Home on the Range. Elizabeth Gilbert (of Eat, Pray, Love fame) found her great-grandmother's cookbook in a box and published it with her own foreword, which is really my biggest problem with the book. Potter is a delightful cookbook author, and I loved the book. I can overlook casual racism and sexism in books published in the 1940s, so I didn't hold those things against the cookbook, but I have a huge problem with the glowing foreword that never mentions (warns) about these aspects of the book.

Helen Oyeyemi, Boy, Snow, Bird. Egregious transmisogyny, which I can't talk about without spoilers. Also moderately annoying was the anachronistic language, but there's some good writing, and some very good. Still not glad I read it, so I can't recommend it.

Currently reading:

Various writers, Luminescent Threads: Connections to Octavia Butler
Sarah Hilary, Someone Else's Skin (DI Marnie Rome, #1)
Nnedi Okorafor, Binti: The Night Masquerade
Anna Thomas, Love Soup: 160 All-New Vegetarian Recipes from the Author of The Vegetarian Epicure

Watching

On Amazon:

Watched all of season 10 of Doctor Who, which I liked. Am on episode 2 or 3 of The Americans, which may become a fave.

On Netflix:

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman: Barack Obama: "It's a Whole New Ball Game Now". Basically an hour of Dave fanboying over Barry, which was odd but comforting.
Season 3 of Lovesick, which is kinda dumb, but I do still keep watching it.

On disc:

Mostly just silly junk with James. We're re-watching The Munsters right now, and we've been watching a bunch of old sci-fi and creature features.

Listening

Mostly Google Play versions of my old albums.

Playing

Same video games as always -- Two Dots and Dots & Co. Also some cards with mom, but not that often because she's been sick.
