Dec. 27th, 2008 03:35 pmA friend* said that
redbird said people were listing where they spent nights away from home in 2008.
Let's see:
Many nights in San Diego, either in my mother's hospital room, at her home, or at my dad's.
I don't think there's anywhere else, but anyone who knows otherwise can correct me.
*The friend's post was locked;
redbird's wasn't.

Dec. 27th, 2008 06:22 pmSo I was making my mom's ham recipe for our christmas(observed) dinner, and I had to call my mom and verify that it really does take that much sugar.
Me: So, a can of pineapple, a *one-pound box* of brown sugar, and a teaspoon of ground cloves? Is that right?
Her: Yep.
Me: A whole pound of sugar?
Her: Yes, a sixteen-ounce box.
Me: Wow, that seems like a lot of sugar.
Her: Oh, no, the cloves cut the sweetness.
Holy. Crap.
But the house does smell like my childhood, and that's usually a good thing. :-)

Kili and the blue dish
Dec. 27th, 2008 08:09 pmI made the ham in the blue dish that my friend Kili and I always tease each other about. She has the same pan, and we joke about how I need to wash it and get it back to her in time for her next batch of kalua pig or somesuch.
Kili died today. I will miss her, and I will always think of her whenever we have kalua pig or stuffed mushrooms or portabella burgers, or whenever I use that damn blue baking dish.
I loved her. She was pure goodness, through and through.
Anyway.
Christmas(observed) dinner was as follows:
Mom's ham with pineapple gravy
Baked potatoes (butter, sour cream)
Corn
Carrots
Green beans
I don't really love ham (okay, I don't like it much at all), but the nostalgia factor made it yummier than I would normally find it. And the kid and
someotherguy approved.
Now Christmas is over. Well, not counting all the dishes. It's been a quiet, peaceful week, and I'm grateful for it.
