So what were the top 5 most loved? I could recommend a few on there. In particular, read Wilkie Collins' the Woman in White. It's literally the first ever heart-pounding mystery-thriller type thing. Very Good Read.

Love in the Time of Cholera (Gabriel Garcia Marquez) and Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky) are also fully worthwhile.

Um, come to think of it, quite a number of those are books I haven't read myself, but I've had them read to me. Swallows and amazons, for example, maybe even Watership down.

1984, george orwell
the bfg, roald dahl
the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, douglas adams
the grapes of wrath, john steinbeck
the hobbit, jrr tolkien

I read The Hobbit to the munchkins. They adored it. It began with an exerpt, actually, in a reader, the "Riddles in the Dark" section, and they begged for more Gollum (and who can blame them?).
