1. What food do you like that most people hate? Well, I don't know about "most", but many people dislike many of my favorite things: Peanut-butter-and-pickle sandwiches. Onion sandwiches. Anchovies. Liver. Sushi. Tempeh. Tofu. Okra.
2. What food do you hate that most people love? Hmm. Plums, perhaps. I don't hate many foods. OH, smoke-flavored things. Cherry-flavored things (though I love cherries). Orange-flavored things, almond flavored things, grape-flavored things, though I like oranges, almonds, and grapes. Lemon-flavored things, ditto. And cinnamon. And thyme. Oh, dear, I'm a much pickier eater than I thought. Oh, I dislike coconut in sweet contexts, but like it in savory things.
3. What famous person, whom many people may find attractive, is most unappealing to you?
Ben Affleck.
4. What famous person, whom many people may find unappealing, do you find attractive?
Roseanne. Janeane Garafolo. Lots of others, but none are coming to mind right now.
5. What popular trend baffles you?
Popular trends don't always register with me, but the need to be reachable at all times (cell phone, pager, blackberry, walkie-talkie) has never felt intuitively attractive to me.

I'm so glad to see that there's someone else who doesn't like cherry-flavored things. I'm not horribly fond of cherries, but I do like them in certain things--however, cherry flavored cough syrup, candy, whatever...ew. The only exception I make is if I have to take Nyquil I get the cherry, just because the "regular" flavor is even more disgusting.

nyquil

i get the capsules because i cannot abide either flavor. yes, initially they seem more expensive but after i don't throw them up, they are far more cost effective.

okay, way TMI.

I wish that would work for me, but I unfortunately have a "swallowing pills" issue, so it's easier for me to hold my nose and choke down the liquid than to have the pill get stuck in my throat.

I just hate taking medicine in general. :)

Not really, dear - sounds like you just have a general antipathy toward artificial flavoring. (When you say "lemon-flavored things," may I assume that, say, cheesecake made with actual lemons and lemon zest isn't what you're thinking of?)

Looking at your list, I'm wondering if you're one of those people who detects what I think of as the "chemistry set" subtext of artificially flavored food.

I don't like lemon-meringue pie, or lemon cake/cheesecake/cookies. The only lemony things I like are Lemonheads and lemonade, and I have to be in the mood for them.

(My very favorite lemonade is made in a juicer: Juice 5 apples, any kind, and a quarter of a lemon, peel included. Yum.)

Heh. OK, then, I guess you're just weird, sir. (-;

(Even though I loathe the sort of people who say, "Oh, come on, you'll *love* [hatedfood] the way I fix it!" I am sorely tempted to ply you with a small glass of my homemade limoncello when we finally get to meet ... )

Does limoncello have alcohol in it? I *abhor* anything with alcohol in it. :-)

Rats. If it's any consolation, I will try *any* food, even if I'm pretty sure I won't like it. :-)

(That's how I found out that I don't mind cinnamon if it's in small quantities and I'm expecting it.)

Lemon sorbet doesn't. :)

(Sorry--I'm doing something that drives me batty when people do that to me. Make you a deal: you eat the cilantro and I'll eat the lemon.)

I don't like lemon sorbet unless it's used as a lemonade substitute. :-) I'm not trying to be argumentative, honest. And gimme that cilantro; I can put a huge dent in it for you.

I know you're not. :) No one is ever going to convince me that I like cilantro, either.

I will happily make a sorbet slushie for you, but will equally happily have one myself and make you something you would prefer. :)

Why, thank you. Hey! You could make me Jessica's salsa -- that has lemons (or limes) AND cilantro! *grin*

From: [identity profile] red-frog.livejournal.com
I think that that's a terrible thing to do to a good lemon, and suspect that you think it's a terrible thing to do to good cilantro. ;)

Someone I know must have a recipe involving cilantro. This will happen eventually.

Date: 2003-11-07 11:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] serenejournal.livejournal.com
No, I LOVE Jessica's salsa. Maybe I need to revisit my lemon assessment. :-) Mostly, it's lemon-flavored things I dislike, but I guess not lemons themselves. Hm. I dunno. ;-)

Is this where I admit that the original satsivi recipe has cilantro in it?

(I once accidentally made salsa verde with cilantro--grabbed it instead of the Italian parsley and then gritted my teeth and tried making it anyway, because what am I going to do with cilantro? Ptui.)

Is this where I admit I took a look at the original recipe online and saw that it had quite a bit of cilantro in it? :) I made it without because it was so good when you made it that I figured I wasn't missing anything important.

I like cilantro, but you won't find me making cilantro pesto any time in this lifetime. I like it as an herb, not as a main course. I think I'm one of those people who finds it soapy-tasting but doesn't mind. Hm. Must ponder.

I always distrust that. I have a pretty good idea of what my tastes are, and if I notice that the item in question tastes like something that I don't like, that's the end.

"This one is different" also leads to problems when applied to artistic media and sexual orientations.

I posted it to [livejournal.com profile] food_porn last year, here:

http://www.livejournal.com/community/food_porn/3829.html

(I often use lots more than 10 lemons worth of zest for this, because I like it *really* zesty. Note that there is no lemon juice, so it's not at all sour or acidic. However, I've combined it with lemon juice and poured it over crushed ice to make an *amazing* spiked lemonade in the summertime.)

I'm down to my last few ounces; must check CostCo soon to see if they've got those 10-pound bags of lemons on sale ...

If I didn't have to be reachable at all times for work, I'd gladly chuck the pager. I like having the cell phone so the kids or my mother can reach me, but when I'm working, I need to be reachable no matter where I am or what time it is.

For the record, though, the day I get one of those *annoying* Nextel phones, just shoot me.

I got the cell phone in the first place because I was working in several shady neighborhoods and was sometimes the only staff member around, or would be coming home late at night and didn't want to take a chance on a problem, alone, in some shady neighborhood. When that changed, I decided not to give up the cell phone because I had gotten used to having it-fortunately, my friends aren't the abusing cell phones type. Now, I'm working in a situation where it's very much to my benefit to have a cell phone, because I'm out of the office travelling to sites much of the time, and if there's a problem or a concern, or traffic I can reach my site, or my office.

In an ideal world, I wouldn't have one at all, but I'm just used to it. If I don't want it to be an intrusion, I turn it off, or to vibrate or something like that.

Took me ages to get a cell phone and to check my email while travelling for this very reason. I rather like both now, but only The Special Few ever get my cell number. :)

One of my professional interests is in a technology that gives you the same kind of access to your work environment no matter where you go or the kind of computing device you're using--even one that does not belong to you. The CEO types exclaim, "Isn't this wonderful?" and I shudder.

At my office we use gotomypc.com to telecommute - it actually works pretty well, and can be used from any computer with web access. It's one of those 'access your computer from anywhere' kind of things - you can do anything you could do locally, including access networks and print things locally and the like.

I do agree that the implications are scary. Luckily, I haven't had it abused by my bosses yet.

Well, okay, only the once. :-p

I *know*! When the premise of "The Truth About Cats And Dogs" was basically "Janeane is so much less attractive than Uma," I was just so boggled.

is that really the premise? or is the premise that janeane's character only thinks so? the casting never made sense to me from the first point of view, but it works just fine from the second one, because i've seen people everywhere argue about who really is more attractive, *heh*. oh, nevermind, i doubt hollywood put that much intelligence into it. i love that movie, btw, solely because janeane is just adorable, and doesn't get enough leading roles IMO, so it's a rarity that i get to watch her for a whole movie.

i find janeane a lot more attractive than uma, though i find uma very interesting-looking, but i know lots of people who i find attractive who don't think so themselves (and i think i am one of those as well, *heh*).

oh yeah, and ben affleck actually repels me. *ugh*.

So many people I know, such as [livejournal.com profile] womzilla, are turned on by Janeane Garafolo that I think of her as a 3, rather than a 4. She's intelligent, she's talented, and if I got to know her, I would probably like her a whole bunch, but in sheer physical sex-object terms, I classify her as "Technically female."
