I mean (and I haven't given this tons of thought, but some, so the words may be middling wrongish) that any sympathetic expression from me comes from a place, normally, of intellectual wishing that things were better for people, rarely from a place of "ouch, that person is hurting and it makes me hurt." Sometimes that latter thing happens, but more often my gut is not as interested in people's wellbeing, nor as ummm empathetic as I feel it would be if I were to describe myself as a sympathetic person, and now I'm thinking of sympathetic in the "evoking positive emotions, as would a sympathetic fictional character" and thinking maybe in that sense, I may be sympathetic. Hm.
