How was I to know that nailing up a whiteboard for my nephew to use while we visited was going to create such a big, perfectly round hole in your wall? John told me that it was obvious that I shouldn't try putting holes in the walls that went east-to-west, and gosh, someone coulda told me that before the hammer materialized in my hand.
Alas, no. Last night at bedtime we found that the hot water was cold, so jwg went into the basement on discovered about 2 inches of water on the floor, which had killed the pilot on the hot water heater. Probably the result of lots of snow + lots of rain + frozen ground + fairly high water table anyway. We've had some water in the basement in the past, but never this much, and never with this result.
Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any more coming in, and John bought a pump this morning, which is extracting water from the basement as I type.
