Good for you. Are there non-crackpot animal rights organizations that you support instead?

They're not necessarily animal-rights organizations, but the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA are a little more moderate.

I won't have anything to do with PETA either. I have very strong feelings about animals - I am practically militant about spaying/neutering and not buying from petstores/puppymills/non-reputable breeders, adopting from shelters and rescues whenever possible. I work in rescue and all my pets are rescues. But PETA goes so far over the top that hardly anybody can take them seriously, and that's a shame, because they COULD do a lot of good.

I support and trust The AAVS (http://www.aavs.org/home.html). I also love Earthsave (earthsave.org, I think), because they give a "completely vegan is a good way to go, but even eating one vegetarian meal a week is a good step, and we should never judge other people for not doing all we think they should be doing" message that really sat well with me when I was deciding what to do about my food choices.

Every once in a while, I wonder if PETA is actually funded by the beef industry and furriers.

Oh my! Now that's perverse, but it does make a certain kind of sense.

That tears it. They're not getting a check from me this year. Oh wait, I've always thought they were cracked.

Is it possible that somewhere way up in the hierarchy of the organization there are and handful of snickering, closet burger munchers who created PiTA as the original Landover Baptist?

I'm sure they'll miss having you as such a stalwart member. *snrch*

I don't support PeTA for other reasons, although that is a good one.

They need to rethink some of their tactics before they act out. Sometimes their actions have some pretty severe negative impacts upon the animals...

Those of us who were reading soc.motss about 10 years ago got to take PETA's measure when one poster (then a vegetarian, as it happens) related how someone at PETA tried to get him in trouble with his university administration over a parody post he had made about the sexual uses of gerbils.

I've been watching them over the years wondering which of their ads was going to get which of the people I know to throw up their hands in despair/disgust at their tactics.

That is disgusting. I'm glad you have a sense of justice.

The Fred Phelpses of animal rights, or as Robert Conquest put it, "Every organization appears to be run by agents of its enemies."

Well, if their various campaigns suggesting that eating vegetarian will make you look like Pamela Anderson hadn't already done it for me, this would have.

I guess it's good (fsvo) that I haven't really kept up with them the last few years.

Yeah, all us vegans over on the vegan communities were also pretty shocked by this.

Who exactly comes up with this insanity? Do they have children or know anything about children? Cause that's pretty fucked up.
